That's neat, and I've never tried that approach.
I still don't understand the "you wont have to cut out any of the white outside of the lines" part - you don't have to do that with a multiply layer ... |

Duplicate the layer, change layer type to "multiply", then delete the original (background). Create a new white layer or background underneath. Voila. |
