The Dell 19" LCD probably has only 6 bit per color and use dithering to similate 16.2 million colors. I am pretty unhappy with mine also.

If you want to just mix color, you may wish to try the virtual palette in Wetcanvas:

Both your friends probably don't do much serious drawing/painting. Unless you are already very accomplished with drawing with a mouse, don't even start serious computer drawing without a tablet.
