Hi, I'm new here and thought I would give a breif introduction of myself (for once).

Name is Dan, I'm 23 years of age. I like to draw, but only in black-lead pencil. I got no formal art-education, but have been thinking of trying croquis/life-drawing for a long time, but never have, because I fear I would start laughing and giggling, embarrasing both me and perhaps the model.
I happen to come across this here forum through a 3drelated forum, saw the great artwork and started thinking maybe I should get a graphics tablet, and try the digital-2d-painting-thing myself, and finally get some colors into my drawings.
I also do some 3d, mainly modeling.

That will do for intros, here's my query:

Just a simple sketch to aid you in understanding my query:
http://www.geocities.com/danberger3d/files/legsetup.jpg

Which bonesetup would enable the higher top speed and faster acceleration? or are the limitations in the muscle-composition?
OR more directly put:
Could a creature with a bonestructure simular to humans (, muscles permitting,) run 60kmh? 80kmh? 90? a hundred?

I read on another topic, that the Graphire mouse sucks, is this true? Is there anyone that thinks it's any good? I got a Microsoft IntellimousePro right now, and love it, best mouse I ever used!

- Just call me Dan.

Sheesh! How do you get the pic to show up in the forum? tried [image]url[/image], didn't work.

first of all, the bone structure isnt that different. on the humans you would have another line going from the ankle to the toes. that "foot" line is the same one as in figure two (from the foot to the first "knee"). so essentially, figure 2 is running on its toes. i do believe this is a bit faster (see the technology behind nike's "boing" shoe.) but i doubt that would be enough for the speed increase you mention, barring muscle differences

now, a cheetah runs at about 90km/h. but, they are very different from humans. first of all, thier hind legs are built like figure 2. but thier entire system is built for one thing, running damn fast.

first, everything about them is sleek. long legs, very slender body.

second, thier muscles are built differently. humans have a mix of white and red muscle mass. red muscle is for endurance, white is for bursts of energy (incidentely, african americans [pc ] have a higher concentration of white muscle, that's what makes them jump higher and run faster. while caucasian have more red, better distance runners.) now, cheetahs have almost all white muscle, or it's equivalent, so they are are damn fast, but you never see them run for more than a minute or two.

also, cheetahs have several unique features that let them do what they do. first, thier entire body works like a spring. it skrunches and releases, letting them take off fast and reach high speed quickly. things like claws and very short hair also help. oh, and they have four legs

anyway, i hope this gives you some answers, but i dont see either of those figures reaching those speeds :\

SporQ, thanks alot for your thourough answer.
Reason I asked the queston is I have this character in developement. It's going to be twolegged alright, but I was unsure about the setup. I'm not no more, much thanks to you, and because I found out that ostriches (which are fast!) have different setups than the ones I portrayed. ( http://www.ostro.com/images/ostrich1.jpg ). This setup would look silly on my creation so it will have human-like legs, simply because it looks better, and whatever setup I choice it still doesn't seem like I can have it go really fast without resorting to bionic power (which are silly on anything but Marvels!)

Thanks Cybergod for explaining how to post a pic.

i saw something on tv about a guy who built boots that are like artificial kangaroo feet. they're structured much like your second drawing, and they take advantage of the super-springy achilles tendon that allows kangaroos to hop so fast/far. the guy was running around an obstacle course with the boots on and he went 2-3x faster than the guy in normal shoes. but keep in mind, he was hopping, not running.

hehe when I was running the 800 meter dash crap in track I was losing and I hated losing so I started running a few steps and then jumping and kept that pattern for the last 200 meters or so. I got 2nd place when I had like 4th or 5th. HOP HOP HOP HOP
