its when you get a nice oak shelf and you put your computer over a clock. the clock must be digital or it will be incompatable with your picture frames.

actually...im not an expert but its something like "unlocking" your processor then going into the bios or somethin and telling it to go faster. then you'll overheat your computer and turn into a giant ice cube then make pie out of left over chicken.

Essentially you have your core mhz that your computer runs on, and you have multiplier switches which gives you your real mhz.

You basically go into bios and mess around with some settings, open up your computer, flick a few switches on the mobo (depending on your computer) and voila. Your computer gains a few extra mhz.

If you don't have enough cooling, your chip reaches a good 250 degrees farenheit and melts.

got my duron600 to 850
won a contest where prize is duron600 doing 1GHz ;) (remember - 1GHz for $50! wee)

Overclocking can be for bums like me, or for rich peoples who buy water cooling or refregirator based systems for their computer. There are many goals and ways of overclocking, but goal is one - make the thing go faster!!

For example to get my duron 600 to 850 all i needed was the mobo that supports multiplier adjustments (A7V the very first that supported it on socketA). Then i got a brick from socket7(BIG heatsink+fan). And put voltage up + multiplier from x6 to x8.5

Viola, thats just one example (and besides half the durons udually do 1GHz).
ITS FUN!!! check www.hardocp.com for visuals and info, and don't forget to look at their forums - it's CRAZY!!

overclocking is basically making your computer go faster than it was made to (or sold to). For example I have a 550Mhz Athlon that I overclocked to 800Mhz. Much cheaper than buying an 800Mhz chip. The life of the chip may be lessened a bit, but it will still last plenty long -- years at least. Only real disadvantage is that it's kinda loud with all the fans blowing inside it

I have an Intel III 733mghz and I don't intend to overclock her because I need her to last me at least another 4 years or so... heh. Money! I need Mo Money!

Thats one of the points of overclocking - more MHz for less moneys. Besides stuff in computer world ages in months, and in 4 years your P3733 will be like x586 cyrix nowdays =]
And also o/c doesn't mean it WOUNT last 4 years. Anyways, overclock overclock overclock! I overclocked my tnt2u - epoxied a huge heatsink on it LOL - looks so mean!

the clock on the bottom right hand side of your wind0z$e box has a small clock. Once this clock is set ahead of it's regular time, you have "over-clocked" it.

Ian: if you spent half the money you did on the 733 buying a lesser chip that could be overlocked to 733, you could have upgraded earlier!

There are places that sell guaranteed overclockable chips (they test them to see how high they go) -- and they provide the necessary equipment, if any, and instructions. Outsideloop.com is where I got my Athlon. It's more expensive than buying a non-guaranteed-overclockable chip, but there's no gamble involved, and it's still way cheaper than buying a faster chip.
