yeah, have you been to his gallery in Santa Fe? awesome work.
i've heard him called a "luminist", and there's something about special paints that have different light-diffusing properties than normal.
It's really cool, because all of his originals hanging are hooked up with dimmer switch track lighting, so, for instance, if you turn the lights down low, the whole painting goes dark except for say, the lightning in the clouds, which still shines really brightly.

I've seen one of his galleries in Arizona. The Southwest seems to be littered with him, Kincade and Christian Riese Lassen galleries. I don't know much about traditional mediums at all, but I thought I heard that they're all acrylic painters? Not sure. Does acrylic give the light properties you're talking about? And, yes I've been through the dimmer switch sales pitch in all those galleries. It's pretty cool to see.
