I'm just sitting here at school(Yes, we have school on saturday here) and have nothing to do, so I figured why not just comment on all those portraits. Even though Joachim already did a great job(much better than I will, anyway), I suppose an artist can never get enough comments. Too bad they have no tablets here
Joachim 1: I really love this one, especially the lighting and colours you used. The nose is a little reddish and shiny, as if you drunk too much
Joachim 2, This has a great look to it! Everytime I quickly glance at it, I think there's a spider sitting in the hair that just came down on a thread(the thin blueish line) ,) But I really love the colours used, very striking effect!
Ysg, I like the look of the blue and the red, but something bothers me, it looks a little too egg-shaped overall. I love the right(his left) eye though.
For the one cut out of construction paper, looks very good! I nenver was able to get anything done with only two tones(not that I would with more anyway)
Painted Melody, I love the general look of this portrait, however his facial features look a little lopsided, to be exact the lower part of the nose and the mouth go a little too much to the right side. I really like the colours however.
Steven Stahlberg, I love the angle of this portrait, very interesting. You overall did a great job on the facial features, especially the eyes and glasses. I sure would like to see this after a longer time of work and detailing.
Steven Stahlberg 2, Personally I prefer the first one, though I also really like this one, especially the lighting.
Krom, What you did so far looks exactly like a person I know! I like the looks so far, although I would like to see it more developed and blended, the lips just look a little pasted on. But it looks very good so far, I sure would like to see it finished.
Above, I like the approach on the drawing, but something about the proportions bothers me. I think the chin is a little too huge, the lips look a little misplaced.
I somewhat like the look of the closed eyes, but did you actually close them when looking into the mirror? ,)
The lower part of the nose looks a bit *too* wide compared to the upper part.
AxO, Love it, a very nice drawing. But wherefrom did you get that picture of my art teacher?
Swami, Going for the Titanic like look on your portrait? , ) I like it, though I would suggest some more details on the eye(looks to much one-tone). The white on the nose should be a little more blended.
The second one looks very nice too, however the ear is very tilted. Also, the skin tones look a little dirty, to be exact the brownish darks compared to the light pink.
faustgfx, This is really good, from afar I thought this was a photograph! I especially like the details, like the headphones and on the watch. The only ting I would, if at all, change is to add some darker tones to the skin.
Also, does your nick have anything to do with vonGoethe's Faust? I recently did a report on that in german class. I really liked it!
Snake Grunger 1, This looks very good, a lot like you if compared to the photo. However, something makes it lack actual character. I would suggest making the catchlight(reflection) in the eye really white but possible some smaller, the greyish tone it is now looks a little boring. Also a better distinction between iris and pupil would be good. Some tone variation on the skin would make it more lively, also the nose looks a little more reddish than the rest of the face. But still, the proportions are well done and you managed to create a likeness.
Snake Grunger 2, This time you usd more hue variation on the skin, but got rid of the catchlight in the eye. I would add it in again as it adds more character. The skin tone looks a little unnatural as well, and the hair is almost one solid tone now ,(
Snake Grunger 3, The skin tone still looks a bit plastic-like, and even tohugh you gave a try at a catchlight it's still a little too faint to give a neat effect. Maybe try a different pose than straight-on, those tend to look a little off quite easily.
balistic, Nice, I love the colours used in this one, although I'd like some more distinction on his eyeball. But I love the effect of the tone values.
micke, Both of those are GREAT! On the first one you look like the austrian finance minister
Anyway, I just really like both of them, although I prefer the "arrogant" one.
Ewooz, Well done, a quite high front though. Also the away-side of the face is a little too small if you ask me, a little "over-foreshortened".
SlightlyTwisted, Now that is one HEALTHY skin colour ,) Because of that it looks a bit zombie-ish, but I really like the looks of it, especially the great attention to detail!
Enalya, Oh my god, and this was done quickly? The two face halves look a little too much alike at this moment, but aside that it's really awesome. I sure would like to see what it would look like if you worked on it longer!
Roundeye, Looks very good, I love that style. How does your girlfriend like you? ,)
Roundeye2, Looks very good, I like the cropping. The highlight near the nose looks a little weird, too much movement. But still, very good, especially the proportions are well done.
Roundeye 3, I like the colours on this much more, great contrasts.
DiXter, I really like the look of this portrait, especially the prominence og the eye and the small line of reflected light. Just the lower lip looks a little pasted in at the border to the skin.
DiXter 2, O myself prefer the first one, in this one you sometimes use a few dark tones too suddely, while parts of the skins are a little unshaded. It's still a very good portrait though.
SpiralEye, Excellent work, though the proportions seem a little off to me, the eyes are placed a little too high and the nose is a bit long. But I love the looks of it.
Acj-Bizar, Nice portrait, you look very friendly ,) I quite like the look of the short hair.
DarStalker1, Peace Man! ,)
Golongria, That picture isn't showing up for me, sorry.
dangerousbotany, It really looks a little like the llama from the disney movie, but I still really like the picture. I love morphs ,)
spooge_demon, The transition into black is a little aprupt, but aside that, I really like the portrait a lot.
tayete, Very nice, I love the look of the features, however most of the shading is a little faint, not even the nostrils or pupils are really dark.
Morbid Guy; Looks very good, the picture shows character. One can still see the brush lines though.
Chunkey, Not the glasses are too sharp, but most of the portrait is too blurry. Smudge tool, eh? ,)
Still, nice job at the proportions.
Olve, I really like it, shows character, though I'm not very fond on the black line around the face, it someow doesn't fit the rest. Maybe try a completely black background?
The second one, Looks great, especially the lighting and colour tones.
Bg, I really like this portrait, it shows a lot of character, although it is a little undetailed and blurry in some places, especially the nse. The hair and eyes look very stylish though.
Petra Pan, Doesn't show up for me, sorry.
Justin Kramer, LOL, you look a little like that bad kind from DragonHeart, sorry ,)
Overall I love the look of this portait, especially the prominence of the eyes, although the dark side of the face lacks a bit of contrast, except for the eye which sticks out even a bit too much on this side.
Tinusch, love it, looks very stylisized. Almost a bit like traditional media.
Nova, Very nice. The flow of the hair contrast to the looking direeciton of the eyes. Very unusual, don't know if it was intention, but I love the look.
The inprogress colour one looks very nice too so far, althoguh a bit too much dead on, which may look a bit weird if you don't shade one of the sides more.
Seagull, Looks very nice, even though probably quickly done. The hair looks a bit too much like a colour blob though.
Acryl, Very good, extremely well done. The highlight on the cheek is a little too bright and sudden. Also the glasses are a little too black. But still, I love the style shown in this portrait.
Evon, Well done, though somehow everything looks VERY round. The hair, the shading, the mouth, the shoulders, everything.
neebhore, Very Quick? It looks like a great caricature! Especially the eyes looks very nice.
richtoon, Very well done, shows character, if a bit pencily in between.
Dr.Zulu, You look very young on the portait! You use some extreme darks and lights, as seen on the nostrils and eye, however you seems to be a little adraid of more contrast on the skin, also the eye seems a little large.
nickmarksdotcom, Neat teeth
Bell's ringing, I might try to coment on the rest later. Sorry! I hope it helps the ones I comented on so far though.

So I had a try at this as well. Screw me. It doesn't look like me much, and it's really bad compared to others here. Oh well, I had fun doing it, planned to only make a 30 minute portrait and started, when I looked on the watch the next time it was hours later

Thank you JOACHIM, I was particularly chuffed with my one, thought about putting it in it's own little thread, for comments etc, but I can't be bothered in the end!
The nose was my favourite bit on it
I think everyone has done great, and snake grunger, i thought your first one was pretty cool! |

Comments for the rest:
Snake Grunger 3, You have a slight attempt at a catchlight here, still not bright enough. ALso, the pupils seem to fade into the iris, make that more defined.
The skin colour still looks a little unnatural, but the difference in tone is great this time! Also the proprtions are well done. Maybe try a different pose than straight on.
Snake Grunger 4, Pose much more interesting, aside that, similar problems as the other. But keep working! You're getting there.
Roundeye 3, I love the colours on this much better than the version before, very striking.
Jezebel, I'd like to see some more portait and less photograph, but still VERRRRRRY well done- From what I can tell, the eyes look placed a bbit too much up and the nose looks quite long. But great job.
Merekat, That in Illustrator? That's awesome, especially the hair is really good. The only thing bothering me a little is the mouth, maybe make both lips a bit wider, especially the upper lip.
Grendel Khan, Well done, you catched a person in seeminly few strakes. The features are a little unsharp, woould love to see more detail.
Gimbal8, Well done, I like it. Just a suggestion: Try a slightly different angle, with a straight on view loking straight forward it looks a little stoned, because the eyes are defocused. Or was that purpose?
And unless you hae a very pointy nose, the angle is slightly off.
Red Leader, Perfect! I just love your style! No comment.
qauternius, Well done, nice hat and shirt
It might be my display, but some of the highlights around the eye look a bit greenish tinted, also the upper half of the face looks a but unsharp. Aside that, awesome.
Dakmoon, NICE! Too bad it's not any bigger. I love the mood of the picture, and the grayscale very much adds to this. The hair looks very good, although there is something bothering me about the eye.
Richtoon2, Already much more painted! Looks great! I would recommend some more contrast overall, and more detailing in the eyes, but very well done!
Ugly, Looks nice, however you were a bit lazy about detailing at times. Teeth instead of a white area would be nice
Also, if you don't want to draw one up, may I recommend a black bacground? The highlights on the skin otherwise look like a hole here.
saripol, Extremely good job on the face, especially the eyes and the mouth. However, the shirt doesn't seem to fit the face, as it is far less detailed. Also the shoulders seem VERY wide.
sear, Nice, I like your use of colours. However, the face lacks more details, especially the eyes look like holes.
Elessil, No comment Ugly nose, and it looks 5 years older than me. |

^ no thats my cave
ELESSIL: I missed your little comment about mine, sorry. Thank you for saying it's good! I appreciate that alot! And it was quick for me, i usually take FAR too long on stuff, but this came out better than most of my other pieces (most of which i haven't ever shown). Also, the eyes, in my opinion was the worst bit on it, I gave up on them in the end
Yours isn't too bad at all, you shouldn't comapre yourself to others!
SEAR: You do not suck, i love the lines and the effect they give, and the hollow eyes has a nice creepy feel to it. |

WOW. these are AMAZING portraits! I'm completely awed and suitably jealous! ;}
joachim: thank you for the crit! yes, it is in illustrator. worked on it over the course of a few days, but probably totalled about 15 hours in it total. still have things I want to tweak, but I'll stop myself after a bit and try not to go completely crazy. actually, I'm kinda surprised it turned out too! thank you muchly. ;} you know any gaming company that would want a meerkat artist like me? I'm job hunting. Specifically in the VA/DC area, but I'm always psyched for freelance. ;}
elessil: thank you for the crit, too! ;} and I do know that I need to tweak how the lips are laying on the face. with the teeth as realistic as they are (believe me, I don't know how that happened, I was working on making them look good, and wham! there it was) the lips just don't seem to match well. so, though I think the shape is right (trust me) I do think I need to incorporate them better. thanks! |

If Joachim's going to be dishing out free advice then I want in!
Here's an awfully idealized version of myself, but it made good Painter practice.

A bit of hangover and some fever..
feels like i'm flooding this thread.. but i think this was such a great practice, i just had to do one more..
I had the worst hangover a couple of days ago. I looked in the mirror and got frightened by my reflection.. I looked really sick!!
I started to do a selfportrait.. but i was to tired to finish it..
And yesterday i got the fever, so today i look as sick as i did then, and i managed to finish it..
Now it's it's time for a nap, my head hurts.. |

hey everyone, great portraits, again. I'm really sorry that I haven't had much time to reply to my thread, I feel guilty. I'm really that elessil took some time to give replies. Thanks for mine
anyway, I will give some really quick replies, don't have much time....
quaternius, great portrait. I haven't got much comments, except maybe what elessil said but it doen't really bother me that much anyway. love it !
darkmoon, your's won't show
richtoon, I like this much better. Not that I dislike linework, but this looks more defined.
snakegrunger, hope it's ok that I replie here instead of mail this time. I have too much work to do...and, I get all dizzy of mails to answer. and, since it's talking about art, it fits just as good here :-)
I'm really happy that you put so much time into this, and I see that you getting better. Though every portrait you've made have different qualities, there are certain things that gets better every time. Still, more subtle elemnts and shading. And, variation of color and glossiness of the skin around the face can improve a lot. ANd, certain areas you can enhanse things you see to make them more clearer. I brushed *really* quickly over your last portrait, it doesn't look like you anymore, but maybe you get some new ideas for your next. (btw, thanks for the comments to my portraits, I did agree with everything)
ugly, funny portrait :-D ....THe things I personally miss is more contrasts and more definition on the different elements in the face.
saripol, looks good ! the ear looks a bit weird, I think. Also, maybe a bit to consentrated highlights, they look correct, but your face looks a bit wet. overall, I like it !
sear, cool style as always ! but I agree with what elessil said.
elessil, cool! but I do miss a bit of difinition, both light and the elements. more contrasts and harder edges would improve it also. Also, the connection of hair and head could be improved.
klaivu, very cool. I like the colors a lot. ALso the values are nice. the neck seem a bit wrong though, a bit too sharp turned. Thought, it's ok to exaggerate such things, but it just seemed like it was spineless in a way. -but good portrait.
dean welsh, looks good. I like the old one. The new one lacks a bit of contrasts, light and sharper edges. also, maybe a bit to separated colors on the hair, eyes and head, which makes it a bit cartoony.
jaku, your's won't show up on my screen.
sedone, haha, you really think my advises are that important ?, -I don't think so :-D
Nice portrait ! The proportions and all looks really nice. Only thing, the exaggeration of the contrasts and light is nice, but I think you should be a bit more conserned about what material it your skin is made of. Like, where is it wet, dry, textured, etc.... also, the color variation. Now it looks a bit like the face is made out of bronze. Hope you see what I mean ?
dixter, looks good ! One thing, seems like the back of your skull is a bit too small...maybe you could try make one where you play more with light too ? But, you do really nice portraits !
gecko, looks good ! nice colors. Maybe it lacks a bit with contrasts. espesially in the pupil, the eyebrows, the hair, eyelashes, nose, cheeks, etc...
...don't need to be darker, just that they have the a darker values compared to other things in your face. also, more material definition with light. also, some more definition in the ambient areas could be nice, inside nose, etc.. but it looks good !
n8, I think the shading looks a bit too muddy, and too dark grey. Be more aware of the values, and don't brush yourself to death :-) The proportion looks good, but maybe certain elements, like the eyes, etc needs more work.
the dangler, cool idea, and nice picture :-D
dome sharper edges and more defined shadows could help though. like the face, the darkest is very bright, and I think even thought it's a bit cartoony, it would wrap things in better if you had some some darker and harder edges, like around eyes, around lips....etc.
olve, very cool ! I like the expression a lot. only thing I miss a bit is harder and more defined edges...seems a bit smudgy some areas.
afh ! now my fingers are numb again, gotta go, hope you find the comments helpful and not offensive. not my intention at all. And if other than elessil wants to comment, it helps me a lot, and the more comments the better !!!
-and, not that anyone commented it here, I will reduse the redness of my noses, hehe...I like doing that, so it's easy to go too far. |

enjoying this thread - picking up lots of great tips to improve myself! Thanks everybody!!
I just picked up the "brush" recently ... I am beginning to understand how addictive painting can become - it's a very refreshing way to engage the left side of the noggin.
The brush is a much more difficult instrument to master - but it's just so darn powerful!
this image is unresolved in many places, but here goes ...

I came to the conclusion that I can't draw worth a shit. Of course, spending hours on an image always amounts to SOMETHING... f*cking greebly shit... anyway...
EDIT:
Worked on it some more, wore my glasses this time -- it's amazing how different things look with glasses on... (sigh)
Tinusch: But man.. look at Joachim's stuff.. (sigh)..

Oh Frost. You're starting to get me depressed too. You're definitely one of the best artists here. Whether you realize your own skill or not, everyone else does and we all respect you very much for it. Keep these pics coming. |
