here are a couple of head studies:
Just a few notes about the proportions of the skull (some marked on drawings):
1) root of nose is approximately at the level of the upper eyelid when open (in profile)
2) upper edge of zygomatic arch level with lower edge of orbits.
3) in front view, the witdth of the outside of the orbit is even with the 'angle of the jaw', the point where the jaw muscle attaches into the lower jaw and also where it changes angles (perfectly named, I guess).
4) structural differences between males and females (in general):
Males - more prominent brow ridge (make forehead look sloping), and mastoid process (bone behind ear), apex of chin more blunt.
Females - Forehead is generally more vertical, and the chin more pointy.
5) other points: understand how the teeth fall in a skull, and then you know that the lips are fairly thick pieces of skin and muscle that overlay them. This will give the mouth the fullness that is missing in many drawings.
I would be great if people could summarize important points from their drawings or things that they learned in the study (I have tried to do this above). This makes the drawings more instructive, which is why we are all here, to study and improve our knowledge of anatomy. All for now. |

here are a few lips.
notes:
1) two panes on the top lip (two sides with an apex in the middle), three planes on the bottom (front and two sides)
2) top lip almost always overhangs the bottom lip in profile.
3) when seeing the face from above or below, the curve of the lips needs to be rendered correctly, as if it was a line wrapped around a cylinder (which it is, consider the teeth a cylinder).
4) bump (node) at each side of the lip is almost always visible and is from a host of muscles tying into the corner of the mouth at that point (smile, frown muscles).
5) shadow the lips with care. Improper shadowing can change an expression entirely or make the lips just look totally incorrect. Remember they have volume and should be shaded as such.
uuggh. fingers hurt from typing. Hope someone finds this helpful. |
