mikko:those are great;the first one is better,i think, but they both work
spooge:those peter pan paintings are really nice, they have a kind of dreamy quality, especially the backgrounds
i did this today at work of one of my friends-used a magic marker and chalk-about half an hour

OK matthew, thanks, lets see it all
I am not sure fired is the correct term, it is never a good idea to fire anyone. Pick another euphemism. But they chose not to renew my contract. But to be fair, I had not a clue of what they were after. I could not makes heads or tails of the direction I was given. So I made it magical and blue-- always a safe bet. Dont know what they finally did. I know the moon must be in there somewhere, just has to be. It will be huge and full and blue. Could someone go see it to find out?
Wigin, ugh no more pan! Unless Wendy is in a one piece.
Prom- I say yes on that update
Tiger1313, I have been working for about 15 years professionally. I did not really get serious about getting better until a few years ago. I was too busy playing golf and watching TV. That mountain you are at the base of? It just gets bigger the more you climb, so dont think about it, you will get discouraged, just enjoy the ride. You will get further in the long run
Styles, cut em off! It will work, I promise. Less time skirt chasin, more time painting!
Digital decoy, no I was not thinking of your orc at all when I wrote that. I was just thinking of my own tendencies. But, I can see you point that that image does seem to suffer from it. I would have spent more time designing and drawing things and less time on highlights, so yeah, I guess that is the sickness. I could take it a step further and say that even before you worry about values the drawing is most important. This is my greatest struggle, as I am not a natural draw type person. And by drawing I do not mean working with lines! I mean gesture, structure, perspective, design. All the garbage that I do here are my attempts at getting better at this.
For instance, the torso of mister Orc is half lying down and half at a 45 degree angle to vertical. The midsection is almost flat and the ribcage is tilted up a little. Sit that way yourself, hold your head upright and you will see that your chin rests on your sternum. So in your pic the head feels a little high, a little sticking out. And to emphasize the gesture, err on the side of shorter, because that reinforces the weight of the beast sitting in the chair.
Ok overpaint,
Dont know if this is any better, but you could mess around with something at this stage longer. But at some point you come up against something that is beyond your knowledge, happens to me all the time, I just cannot visualize something cause I dont understand what is going on structurally. Off to life class for another thousand hours. This is why working from photos will not get you anywhere, you sit there like a trained monkey copying shapes. And a strange thing happens when you get better at drawing, your design improves as well. |

Mr. Spooge, you do not only excel in understatement but also in finding the right words to make one aware of the essencial points in painting. Thank you for the overpaint. It again shows, that a good "performance" of a figure does not come from elaborate shading and highlights but from proper and thoughtful placement of the volumes in space. I will keep that in mind while Im practicing.
@ Prometheus-ANJ:
I did that a few month ago:
And youre right, its great fun!
You know, we must have played the same games in our childhood - Kid Icarus, Metroid, Ice Climber ... these are just great, NES rocks! (did you play "Gradius"? Also a great game!) _________________ Que la fuerza te acompae! |

Hey, Prometheus-ANJ, I really enjoy your picture (upper one). I definetly see some influences of Giger. Do you like the art of Giger?
The other ones were neat too! Keep up.
I also enjoyed Mikkos, Tigers and Decoyss pics too. Oh, and Mr. Spooges too of course.
Been waching Swarms works too. Im in love with those. So french.
Now that Im inspired again, Ill go and grap that pen! |

HECK. You know, I spend less time on this one than on the last (about 5 hours) but still Im coming to no satisfying result unsless I begin to tweak and noodle on the painting. And after forcing the picture into its final shape the only satisfaction there is, that it does at least not look totally screwed up but I just dont get a grip on simplicity...
And thats driving me mad!
Thats just like trying to say something really simple and than not being able to stop talking.Sure, at the end everybody knows what you wanted to tell them but it could be said so much easier.
Oh, I hope its just practice... _________________ Que la fuerza te acompae! |

Woweee. I had to lurk for a loooooooong time due to work (being a full-time freelance graphic designer has some perks. A 40-hour work week is not one of them). I think I forgot how to draw in the interim.
So yeah, a scene from "Suicide Club" popped into my head. And I had a nice drawing. And I was really into it... into about 20 minutes. Then I did this. It actually was a nice change of pace from the usual polished stuff I try to do (and fail miserably at).
Oi.
Glad to see so many people improving, and so many people still around.

Thanks, Pawel!
Another loose one before I give my orc prince another try...
If I only could understand the human body as a rock. If it would only go into my head, that a posed figure is not just a stadard body bend into position but that the pose itself is a form of the figure, standing there alone with its own laws. Im always struggling to bend the figure in my mind and force the limbs into postion, imagine how the standard figure looks like and then guessing how the posed figure would look like ... thats crap! The pose has a beauty on its own and it should be searched for the special features of the pose and its shapes and not for the points it inherits form the standard standing pose. I guess, thats what live drawing is all about. _________________ Que la fuerza te acompae! |
