I just got back from the Resident Evil movie and all I have to say is...wow!
While it's not a masterpiece of cinema or an oscar contender, it is the first video game movie that didn't really suck.
Any of you who thought about seeing it but were afraid of it being crap, GO SEE IT!!! |

It was ok, the whole sort of underground metal-ish sort of scenery was interesting, reminded me of aliens. Allthough some of the acting and dialogue was complete shit. I remember one of the characters saying something along the lines of
"yeah, I shot it, it's dead, yeah, it's not getting back up"
"that's one zombie that won't have to (something clever and zombie related)"
"You'll have to work for your meal zombies!"
*sigh* |

I'm going to see this today just because I like silly action films. And I enjoyed the games, of course, this is probably nothing like them... but I'll be pleased just to see mindless violence and lame lines.
Hey, I enjoyed The Mummy movies, I thought they were pretty funny. |

I saw the movie on opening night, went with my friend's GF, she wanted to see The Count of Monte Crist (something along that line), but it wasnt playing anymore, so the only movie that hadn't started was Resident Evil. It was one of her movie choices before when we talked, so I suggested it. I knew it was based on a video game since I've played it a few times, but don't know the exact story line, I dont own a PSX. She didnt know it was about zombies and s uch. She was freaking out during the movie, it was fun to watch (the movie and her freak out, lol).
It wasn't the best movie, but it was certainly a movie that made me jump out of my seat at times, it was a good feeling. I haven't seen anything that "jumpy" in a while. The only thing I have to complain about it (other than the plot...) is that I can't take zombies seriously at all. I just see them as normal people with their hands out infront of them, mumbling, walking slowly, and drooling. I dunno what has made me think like this, but perhaps its just because I do not believe in them. The effects were great in it though, like the rotting flesh on the dogs. Things that were overdone? The CG creatures, the scenes where it showed the point of view by the computer security system where it was scanning people's faces, identifying voices, scanning the guns when they were in the people's hands and identifying them..... I dunno, it just seemed dumb that it was doing that, even though the face scan/voice identification is most likely do-able nowdays.
Overall, it was a "why not have a chuckle and waste a few bucks for once" kinda movie to me. |

I don't know if I want to see it. I mean, Without George Romero, it can't be that great. I can't believe they fired George. The entire zombie genre OWES George EVERYTHING. He practically invented the genre. |

its one of the campy fun films....but i have to agree with lunatique, George Romero wouldve made the movie far more scarier than it is now....too bad Romero and Capcom(i think it was capcom) didnt see eye to eye.. |

yeah but romero's one problem is... : he doesnt know how to make a good film.
especially not these days, anyone see his last , uh, BRUISER, you know, if you thought monkey shines or creepshow were bad, george hadnt show you anything yet... god, he's made more bad films than just about ANYONE, uh... knightriders, the dark half, the BAD half of 'two evil eyes'... his direction is so cold his films feel like they were made by refrigerators (?)
he almost redeems himself with DAWN OF THE DEAD... almost.. |

I saw it last night - I thought it was good, campy fun. Sure, it could have been better - but as a fan of the game, I was pretty pleased.
****minor spoiler*** The end sets up what happened in RE2 and RE3: Nemesis, so I think the second film is going to kickass in terms of zombie-shooting fun. |

After reading this article, I think I actually want to see the movie now. It makes me happy to know the director was a huge fan of the game and really wanted to make a movie that would make gamers happy. |

"specially the scene where she jumps up the wall and kicks the dog"
I bust out laughing almost every time I see that part of the trailer.

hmm
I don't get what so funny about that part...?
Would anyone care to explain?
I think it seems like a good, cheesy action-movie (kinda like "Blade"). |

Hehe. It's funny because that dog-kicking shot is sooo overly stylized when it really shouldn't have been. I mean, just KICK the damn dog. Don't have to jump off the friggin' wall and do it Matrix style, you know?
But, that's what being cheesy is all about. It's like the cinematic equivalent of using really garish colors and having pretentious poses in a painting. |

As far as games going to the big screen go, this was done better then Tomb Raider in my opinion.
Daijoobu: Bustin' some slow-mo, gravity defying off-the-wall martial arts move to kick a dog in the head is funny. If it has to be explained, I have to bring your appreciation of cheese into question. |

I guess that's what I didn't like about it... the fact that it was a bit "Matrixy". I'm so tired of just about every movie using that slow-mo karate choppin' craziness.
But then, I don't care too much for cheesy films to begin with... sometimes they are alright, but I don't think I'd like this one. I decided that when I saw the dog scene and the scene with the red 3d gal with just plain awful lip syncing. Reminded me of a dubbed foreign film, hehe. |

Ah, I see.
Lunatique: Yeah, but then it wouldn't have been cool...and if I understand this right, this isn't just some dog. I haven't seen the film but I would guess that the dog is some kind of zombie or such and I could imagine that it is kind of fitting to dispose of an unusual opponent in an unusual way...? Of course its funny, but not funny like "haha"...I thought the fighting scenes in "Matrix" were funny too, but I wasnt laughing, they were funny because they were cool.
Gimbal8: I'm very well aware of what would constitute as cheesy and what wouldn't, thank you
I think that "MI:2" is an extremely cheesy movie (in a good way), but its also extremely cool and stylish and one of my favorite movies. The beautiful and awe-inspiring slow-mo scenes are maybe not always called for and often very unrealistic, but they're soo good and over-the-top, that at least I am ready to forgive the silly story.
Jezebel: I get your point, and I could see how someone might not like this kind of scene. As you've probably guessed by now, I'm a real sucker for this kind of effect and I'm a big fan of the Hong Kong-style of movie.
By the way, have you seen "Crouching tiger, Hidden Dragon"? What did you think about it? Did it make you laugh?

I absolutely adored CTHD... but I hardly think Resident Evil is comparable to that. :P |

Hehe, no of course not
But the coreography in CTHD is also overly stylized and I just wanted to know how people think about that compared to, in this instance, the wall-kick Milla Jovovich does in "Resident Evil"...I can't really see the difference between the two. |

Saw it - pretty decent for a B-Horror flick. I liked the Home Depot sets. :] The CG boss was pretty badly done, they should have hired me ^_^ Milla was somewhere in between her pretty and ugly selves. Poor kid's as flat as the salt flats of Nevada. At least they had lots of neck breaking and brutality. |

I think this film helps me gear up for the ultimate brutality of Blade II this weekend - I just re-watched the first Blade film on DVD (it's good fun, and I hear the second is leagues beyond it). This is a pretty fun/geeky year for films so far, and we also have Star Wars Episode II (hopefully it's nothing like EP1), Spiderman, Minority Report, and The Two Towers ahead. |

Daijoobu: I guess you and I are discussing different flavors of cheese. To me, good cheese is the kind of stuff you can point and laugh at with your friends, like watching MST3K. Bad cheese is the kind of stuff that is too dumb to laugh at.
I don't think slow motion, wire stunts, or "matrix" style effects make something cheesy at all. I loved CTHD and I wouldn't use the word cheese to describe any aspect of the movie. But if anyone has seen the movie called Faster Blades, Poisonous Darts where the ninja slides under the crack in the door as a plastic garbage bag cut out in the shape of a human...well, that is like a chunk of super-sharp cheddar. Good stuff.
You know you've experienced bad cheese when you get up from the TV filled with anger saying 'I can't believe I just wasted two hours of my life with that!' Highlander 2 was almost that bad if it wasn't for the hilarious thing about them coming from the planet Ziest. Bwhahaha Man, that is so infuriatingly stupid I have no choice but to appreciate it.
There are some flavors of cheese I have trouble appreciating though. Check out the previews for Jason X. I suspect that one may be too stupid to even laugh at.
And speaking of HK action flics and CTHD, Zu Warriors should be coming out this year too. |

Gimbal8: Well, cheese comes in different flavors The kind of cheese I'm primarily talking about is the kind when you know that it is stupid, or at least very exaggerated, but you still really like for some twisted reason ("Blade", "The Mummy", "The One", etc). Then you have the "hilariously stupid" cheese, when its so bad its funny ("Commando", "Rocky IV" and so on). And you have the "infuriatingly bad" cheese, that makes you angry on the moviemakers for taking away two ours of your life ("Godzilla" , "The dentist", any movie starring Matthew Broderick, "Star Wars:The phantom menace"). I would definitely place the scene with Milla Jovovich wall-kicking the zombie-dog in the "over-the-top-but-still-very-cool" category...

My wife is a huge Resident Evil game fan. She is terrified of zombies. It was so funny to watch the clips from the new RE on Gamecube and hear her say "OMG, I must have that game. But I'm not playing it."
Can you imagine in the future playing a game like RE in virtual reality? My wife didn't like that idea because I told her that the VR goggles would come with little clamp-like devices that squeeze down upon your shoulder/neck area when zombies start biting on you. Hehehe |
