I took on a huge professional assignment as a favor to a friend. I detailed the entire shoot, from visiting the locations, conceptualizing, lighting tests, exposure ideas and composition notes, minute-by-minute account of the entire shooting day, to comparisons of before and after post production photos. You can see the entire thing here: http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/topic/141916/0
The actual shoot and final pictures are one page 6 of the thread (for those that don't want to read through all the planning and technical advice from other photographers).
For those of you that are interested in photography, I'm sure the detailed account would be just as helpful and educational to you as it was for me.

there's one image there (I don't know if anyone commented on this yet)
it's an image of a coupple of peopel in a board room meeting where you changed the background projector image from a map to an arch. that picture jumped out me, becasue the reflection off the table just doesn't go with the change. you know what I mean ? |

They are all there. The whole thread documents every step of the way. You just have to keep reading it. It's very educational I promise. If you want to skip to the final images, it's on page 6 I think. |

you know i don't know jack about photography and have no plans on using it for anything other than finding my own reference images, but i gotta say that was a damn interesting read
really nice job too, i can't believe those final images are the same office either, that place was ugly in those first shots!
the place actually looks like a cool place to work now (which means you did a damn fine job) |

I gotta say, those first shots on the first page are a lot better than the final ones on page six.
Just kidding
Thats a really interesting and insightful read, thanks for takin us all on the ride with ya. I guess the first rule of being a professional is: Never show your client the process! Just let them think you have magical powers that creates pretty pictures. _________________ http://www.angelfire.com/art2/wfkeil |

I know precisely jack shit about the technical aspects of artificial lighting, so seeing your thoughts and sketches and exercises in lighting placement and practical use is pretty valuable.
Also, that Guy Mancuso guy is such a dick. I can hardly talk to other photographers, because they're so convinced that they're the next Ansel Adams/Richard Avedon/Edward Weston that objective dialogue is out of the question (present speaker included). THEIR workflow and technique is the only proper way to take a photo, and the rest is utter newbescence.
That's probably the biggest lesson to be gleaned from this assignment. To hell with what THEY all say; you're the one behind the camera. The biggest and best suggestions anyone in that thread could make was to get better equipment, because the entire undertaking would elsewise be impossible. Then, when you actually pulled the assignment off, you got a bunch of "THESE ARE GREAT! .. considering..." _________________ QED, sort of. |

I am by no means a photographic genius...but...
Their place sucks. Their lighting sucks.
shooting:
1. generally avoid clutter. Clean off a table, put the camera on the table pointed towards a window or other generally vacant area. focus on the person, let the background blur out for the most part.
2. shoot from low looking up. dirty floor - don't show it. :P
3. Stairs? Stairs are good. Stairs mean the place is big...Even if the stairs lead away from their office space (multiple tenants in one building).
4. use that meeting room for several shots. it's the nicest place there.
uhh - I have more suggestions...but I'm gonna go carve a pumpkin instead. |

Impaler - actually, Guy isn't that bad. He's a lot older than most of us, and has decades of experience, so he's not talking out of his ass or being oppressive or anything. Have you checked out his website? His work is quite nice actually, and his experience shows. He's not a big famous name or anything, but he's definitely a pro that has a lot of knowledge to share. I think in photography, a lot of rules really can't be broken as it is with painting, because the fundamentals of shutter, aperture, metering, light quality, DOF..etc are fixed by laws of physics, where as painting contains a lot stylistic elements are not bound by rules. Anyway, guys like Guy (haha, I made a pun!) mean well and aren't trying to be a$$holes or anything. Or I hope they aren't. . . .. Heh.
Jaime - The results are on page 6 of the thread. |

Great job Luna.
That shoot must have been grueling, but having to do all the post production work touching up the photos must have been the most frustrating part of the whole thing. I mean, you asked them waaaay in advance to clean the area and equipment, just to show up and have the place look like shit...
Well, at least in reception they have some nice things to look at.
Nicely done.
