I have an iiyama 17" HMU703 VisionMaster, but I've never been satisfied with it from the day it arrived. Pixels all blurry and it weighs more than my desk.
So I'm looking into getting a nice LCD display to use purely for art related work, but I'm worried by consumer reviews on nearly every website complaining about dead pixels.
We have 19" DELL Ultrasharp displays at work and they are amazing. Lovely crisp pixels and nice colour depth. We have lots of them and I've never seen a dead pixel on any of them.
But my main worry is that if I do get a monitor with 1 or more dead pixels, it's going to detract completely the need to have it in the first place. Has anyone else had this problem on a TFT/LCD they've bought? The companies deliberately make it has hard as possible for you to get a replacement unless there are more than, say, 4 dead pixels per million.
Are they really noticeable and distracting? Is it worth waiting till the production technology is perfect? At the moment I'm going on consumer reviews and not my own experience with TFTs. |

Ive had two Dell Laptops and most recently a mid-range Viewsonic LCD, Ive also used an NEC MultiSync and Apple Studio Display in work and have never experienced any dead pixels in any of them. I think with modern LCD's today the chances of you getting 1 or more dead pixels are very very slim. But theres still a chance I suppose and most manufactuers dont recognise them as faulty unless there is over 4 pixels dead i think.
Ach take a chance and go for it, if you want to make sure you could shell out a bit extra and buy one in person from a high street store and ask to check it before you buy.
I dont think i could go back to using a CRT! |

Dell USA is having a promotion, so this is a good time to buy Dell LCDs. I am using a Dell 19" now, no dead pixels.
Actually, one or two isolated dead pixels are more of a nuisance than a disaster. You probalby will be able to see your text/image without major impairment. You should also be able to move your image around the dead pixel when you are painting to do a proper job. |

I have a 17" TFT with no dead pixels, but my brother has the same monitor with one dead pixel (it's actually a red pixel). Whenever I'm in front of his monitor I don't realize that the pixel is there, I must look for it (it's in the lower right part of the screen though).
However I don't know if it'll be more noticeable when drawing. _________________ "Ever forward, my darling wind." -Master Yuppa

manufacturers guarantee that all their displays will leave the factory with 0 dead pixels.. but they usually come out after a week or so of use.. they can also appear if you treat them badly ie. knock them about..
i have 1 dead pixel near the middle of my Laptop screen (came out after about a week and a half of use - i was gutted), i must admit that in day to day use i hardly notice it..
a really nice 17" TFT is the Samsung SyncMaster 173P
manufacturers won't replace your TFT unless u have a cluster of dead pixels on the display .. if you read their site information they give the exact specs of how many etc. each manufacturer specifies a different amount.. |

Thanks for the advice guys!
I understand the manafacturer's problems to an extent. If they throw away every LCD plate that has 1 or 2 dead pixels, the price of TFTs would be phenomenal. I guess my main concern is dead pixels that are annoying, but below the manafacturer's replacement requirement.
But anyway, I'm finding that I can look at my TFT at work all day with no noticeable tiredness, but at home I get irritated looking at the CRT for any length of time, and that's still with an 85Hz refresh.
Cheers. |

I got this 23" HP L2335. I really like it a lot. No bad pixels, great color. The size is actually a little overwhelming at first. Crystal clear. I'm not running it DVI yet (will do so when I get new computer)
The littler monitor is the original 19" - replaced with the HP 2335
