Watmough, Btw, your comment on the spam eggs sausage and ham was hilarious! Your watercolors are stellar as well.

Mathew and ani: good job guys.

concept. i read harry potter, Embarassed , and yes, i simply love the book. so i drew a portion of it that i read...
i dont like the stuff from the movies. they kind of ruined the book.

Tried to reverse engineer Giger's alien for fun, checked out piles of animal/insect reference books.. what I found out is there's quite a bit of shark in that design, maybe that makes it so frightening for us.

If Zerg and Alien could mate:

Inferus that comic looks cool, it reminds me a lot of Mike Mignola work that cover.
That swordsman is really nice Octavian.
Pato: Wow!

Anishimad: thanks dude, but I am way far from grasping Craig's advice. He makes it sound and looks so simple. But liek he said, I'm sure its way more complex. I'm too old and have been painting too long to be this shitty.... Sad

matthew, the ground looks solid Smile thanks, it's nice to get different views...
learn a bit from here and there, maybe I'll get better along the way.

Trying to force Craig's words into my conscience. It should be and seems simple enough but then... it's not.

Anishimad: Nice job. Btw, I use photoshop all the time and it used to be all I used. But I am venturing into painter to force myself to learn to paint without all the fancy photoshop efx. also my style in photoshop began to rely too much on spooge's influence so I decided to relearn the basics and moved into a program where I feel like I have to "just paint". eventually I'll combine the two cuz painter kicks so much ass, but in a different way than P.S. DIG?

VIag, thats really nice... must be even better to be hanging out at work with sparth and barontieri. You work with them right?

anyway, my homie Teyekinik drew this up and I love it so naturally with his permission I HAD to paint it. It was mucho fun. I went crazy on the glow brush... sorry. I preserved the line work because it is really nice.

Hi all,
First post here...been lurking on the forum for a while now, finally got to register and join the thread. You guys have certainly inspired me to draw more.
I am still new to the whole digital painting thing...it certainly isn't as easy as it seems. Confused
Anyways, my attempt of the night. Razz

qinmenfei12: That artrage sketch is cool.
octavian: sweet robot octavian. I really like those brush strokes on the metal.

viag: Wow your latest is just awesome. One of my favorite from you . Dang its so dynamic.

I've been filling up this book I have with notes on light and how it works. It has helped me so much. I think everyone should start a book and try to fill two pages a day with notes. Pretty much I'l make little sketches and right about anything I can't explain in words. My plan is to take a huge amount of notes and someday publish a book of my own that will pretty much explain everything I can possible think of about light and how it reacts with objects.

no references.

welcome Disco Sceince! those are nice introductory pieces. I love your name too!

synnical, thats very good. WElcome!

Qinmenfei12: really nice works.. that artrage kicks but!

Thanks Chris-M. I can really tell that your notes are paying off. The bottom of the ship on the second one may be too dark. The light is great, but I can see similiar problems that I have with technique.. I mean your light is very good and convincing, but somehow the execution fails. You know? as far as brush stroke and form definition. I don't know how to solve it or recommend a crit to you cuz I can't do it in my work either.

It bums me out cuz I see people like Spooge, Wassup, and Sparth making these really stunning works and seemingly with such ease.... leading us all to believe that if we're diligent enough we'll get there some day... I've been at this for 5 years or so... I still can't make my paintings as esthetically pleasing as I would like.... and I kill myself with notes and thoughts about light and form. I paint all the time, I draw a lot as well. I study art books and poor my mind over websites like goodbrush.com, sparth.com, and supalette.com. My girlfriend is about to lose her mind cuz I'm always thinking about art. I'm sure 99% of us are just as serious too.

I guess I'm wondering... do you think its really possible to achieve that level some day? I'd like to hear your thoughts since you've been around here for a while. I've heard a lot of professionals say that "its about time or mileage"... really?

anyone else have thoughts?

I had a painting but now that I look at it... I don't want to post it.

octavian:

you bet you can paint like mullins. You just gotta work hard and never look back. I think one of the major things some people are missing is good traditional painting practice. I painted many black and white paintings from life just a couple months ago and I learned alot about value from them.

Yea I work every second of the day to improve my skills, One of the best ways to learn is to constantly ask yourself questions about things you see. If I look at something and can't explain whats happening in words and why that color or value is the way it is then I will take the time to find the answer. That's one thing checked off my list, now I got 249023489423 things left to study. It all get's easier once you can spot the relationships of values faster. It really does just take time and a lot of work.

Less light = less contrast between the shadow and light side and more light means more contrast between the shadow and light side.

reflectivity plays a huge part in everything. The sky and sun determine the highest value on the ground. No value on the ground will be greater then any in the sky. If there are bright light sources on the ground then of course a value might be higher on the ground.

Next time you are in a fast food place sit down by a table near a window, face outside and notice how it picks up the sky value outside. The table's natural value is probably much lower but when you add the reflection of the sky it raises the value. Obviously the table value won't be exactly the same value as the sky unless it's a mirror but the value is raised enough for one to see the relationship with it and the sky.

Painting in higher values does not create the illusion of light but it is the contrast of light and dark values that creates light on the canvas. That's why a lot of painters including myself put down some shadows first so the light is easier to see.
