The new version of Windows coming out between late 2006 and early 2007 is called Windows Vista. It's been codenamed "Longhorn" for a while now.
Anyways, here are some screenshots I took earlier while testing it out.
It has a lot of Macintosh influence, especially the finder-style explorer and the recyclebin is now the round metal trashcan, haha.
The effects are now rendered with your graphics card stuffs so there are various blur, tilt, glow and other things going on all the time..
Here's a folder of Vista Screenshots.
I would put em in the thread but I'll be adding more to the folder tommorow.
I also apologize that I don't have any kind of cool gallery system employed. |

mucho thanks for posting these Hamster.
Do you know what versions this system will come in? will it be similar to xp with proffesional and home version? will it have both 32-64 bits support?
Hmm I am a bit split about the future of windows though, either I do upgrade to that "Vista" version in the future or maybe I will go Linux all the way, still exploring alternatives for now so we will see.

oh my god
if explorer is more like finder's functionality then that's a step in the wrong direction, imo. Finder sucks ass.
thanks for the screens - looks interesting but . . . not sure what to think visually. The OS looks piece mill - some parts are cool and slick while others are kinda basic. Guess that's why it's a beta

if u doin't like the explorer - change it
yes Vista will be in both colours, 32 and 64bit - it will be true 64bit support rather than the thrown together XP64 |

Oh, even in 2007 they will still use the same Notepad, Paint, Calculator.. this is so sad! haha.. Instead of spending mad cash on bloatware like MediaPlayer, they should just improve what they got. But then again, despite being a big piece of bloatware, Windows seems to keep afloat by staying compatible like Cartman's trapper keeper 2000. |

Microsoft Internet Firexplorer 7 - Come explore the future of the internet!
Now with a totally revolutionary new set of features that have never ever been seen before in a browser:
- A-bunch-of-windows-in-one-window interface! Switch between multiple websites in the same window with our brand new "Earmarked" system! We invented it!
- Hate multiple search bars? Try our super-awesome (and totally original!) bunch-of-search-bars-in-one-drop-down-menu feature!
- The internets want to steal your identity! Stop identity theft and spywares with our built-in pop-up blocker! It not only stops malicious advertisement, it actually prevents you from opening known virus sites like "Opera", "Linux" and "Mozilla FIREFOXHAXORS" Now THAT'S protection!

I like the screenshot of the windows installation. Do they let you run Paint during the installation for the sake of pasting in screenshots? _________________ What doesn't kill you makes you stronger.

that's why I am in doubt cause this virus shit is starting to get out of hand.
Didn't the japanese start to build a custom made operative system? anyone have any information about that project?
Microsoft should make something unique in terms of having the software to make new file endings for every new saved file, like a .doc changed into .oxs and everytime you re-saved it comes up with a new file ending and block the old one. hmm shouldn't that take care of malicious ones?
oh well hmm nevermind me here, move along.

Perhaps, or maybe you end up with such a hodgepoke of different files and extensions that you accidentally click on "game.vir" downloaded from free-viruses-for-your-computer.com. _________________ What doesn't kill you makes you stronger.

soooo... more importantly, does it feel more responsive booting up, using photoshop etc? Is the multitasking any better than XP? which I find thrashes my paging files when switching betwen apps and takes far too long. |

Dude, I've tried just about all the media player/jukebox apps out there, and even though they are all faster and more efficient than WMP, NONE of them can do everything I need, and I'm pretty much FORCED to use WMP because it has all the functions I need. For playing/converting, I use foobar2000, but for organizing and archiving, WMP is the only thing useable for me (but it's friggin' slow as hell). J River's Media Center comes close, but it's got a stupid shuffle system.
Hey Hamster, does the next generation of WMP allow you actually change the background color of the UI in Library mode? I cannot for the life of me understand why software makers let you change "skin," but they don't let you touch the actual content display pane. I hate how bright WMP or itunes is in the actual content pane, and I wish I could change that.
Also, just curious--you won't get in trouble with any NDA or anything showing us this stuff, right? |

Luna: Oh.. i don't need any features like that. I only have a 300-400 mp3 folder, and i don't need to organize that. |

Thats what I was thinking too But surely the OS could to some extent improve on multi-tasking.
For example, if i have PS, Cinema 4D, Firefox and iTunes open there should be no reason for any slow down when im painting a texture in PS, save it then try to switch to Cinema 4D to update the texture. Occasionally there can be up to 5 seconds of stuttering and redrawing of the bloody screen.
Sorry for the thread hi-jacking but can anyone suggest any decent hardware/software changes or tweaks for this problem? will more ram help?
my box is:
XP pro
Abit aa8 MB
P3.2 ghz
1gb ram
2x 120 gb Maxtors
G-force 5900 128mb

ouch.. iTunes hits ur system in a big way 10% + on my system so it lasted all of 2 mins on my workstion
i find winamp much less CPU intensive
if your running iTunes because of an iPod get the iPod winamp plug-in
how big are your textures? how much RAM do u have set to PS?
what could be happening is when ur working in PS u have too little RAM allocated to it - so when u change app it hits ur Pagefile and then ur HDD which could cause the stuttering in ur music
do u not have hyperthreading on ur P4? (not quite the same as having 2 CPU's but def helps)
and a dual sys won't set u back as much as u think, but then if u don't have the funds.. then any hardware upgrade is going to hurt.. |

Thanks Bob
Textures generally around 2000px square, maybe have 2 - 5 open at once, have 60% of ram allocated to PS. I didn't really write that very well above, PS is fine when working in it the slow down only occurs when switching between apps.
Yea I have hyperthreading.
Just did a quick test, opened up about 10 apps and tried generally working and switching with iTunes booted up and without and it definately makes a hell of a difference! Didn't realise it hogged soo much resources, and have never noticed before as I nearly always have it running in the background. Will give wimamp a go.
Will be getting a new system when Vista is in the shops so ill look into a dual rig then, I use a dual G5 in work with all the same applications so I guess my frustration stems from wanting the same performance in a computer costing 1/3 of the price!
cheers |

Every new release of windows I'm always hoping it'll be cooler (/will suit my brain better) than Mac OS 10.
Some of vista's 'context-sensitive content-mangement' stuff, with your music showing up in special music-appropriate window style and so forth, that's a pretty good direction for improvement for me.
Content management has to be, imo, the most obviously crap part of using any modern computer, but that mentioned change looks like it's in a positive direction. I am admittedly, not a hardcore OS-architecture-knower-of~.
