I have an old acer travelmate c102Ti, it's has a excellent size.
Unfortunately the screen is pretty crappy, even in the shade it's hard to see anything.
For use inside it's great, but I cant say I have used it that much lately. |

I have a Toshiba Tecra M7.
It is wonderful; the only drawback is the batery (it will only lasts for about 2 hours). _________________ Visit my Website at

Currently, I have a Motion LE1600 and am contemplating upgrading to an LE1700 now that they are out in masse...
Do not have a "daylight viewable" LCD, and it shows (or lacktherof) especially on overcast days. Which is at least 3/4s of the year up here, and confines me to the great indoors as if the constant rain wasn't doing that already.
What can I say about working on a tablet? Well, for starters, you are going to miss your keyboard. A lot. You get a graphire class tablet behind the screen, which isn't necessarily bad but does leave a bit to be desired. The cursor tracking feels somewhat slower than a Cintiq, but is not overly slow. Battery life is decent at 4-5 hours, but can still be inconvenient if I'm not around an outlet all the time.
Despite all this, I have found myself using my tablet a lot more than my Cintiq-backed workstation since getting the LE1600. Mostly, it just comes down to convenience. Sure, the workstation has a lot more bells and whistles, laglessly handles brushes larger than paintings on the tablet, but the chief advantage is that I can carry the tablet with me, and whenever I have a few minutes, I can pull it out and start painting.
Is there an advantage to tabletPCs over laptops + tablets? No, in fact tabletPCs are at somewhat of a disadvantage. Not only are notebooks generally more powerful than an equivalently priced tabletPC, tabletPCs only come with a graphire class pen tablet.
Which is better entirely is a matter of perspective, and at least in my case, the advantages of working directly on the screen outweighed the relatively impotent performance since I already had my workstation at the time, and could migrate paintings over to it if I needed to work larger.
If anyone is looking to get a tablet for painting, I recommend sticking to slate tablets instead of convertibles.
While the keyboard is nice if you are going to be doing a lot of typing, it is just extra weight when you are painting, or awkward to use if you keep it out to use your hotkeys. Frankly, just use a wireless bluetooth keyboard if the lack of hotkeys gets too uncomfortable. Wireless for a reason; one advantage of a tabletPC is that it behaves just like a sketchpad, giving you a lot more freedom to rotate it however you see fit. A wired device attached to your tablet obviously diminishes that.
Weight is a big issue with tablets. I ultimately went with the Motion LE1600 because it had the best weight/features balance at the time. The less unnecessary hardware such as keyboards and optical drives your tablet has, the better. Get an external USB drive instead. My LE1600 weighs 3 pounds without the second battery installed, and that still gets uncomfortable after holding it unsupported for an hour or two.
Make sure you get a tablet with a respectable amount of battery life, though. While your tablet may say it has a battery life of 6 hours, it is going to be less than that as soon as you turn off the annoying automagic screen brightness "feature" that dims the backlight when you least prefer. |
