I enjoy the subtle lighting effects in this image and it seems like you have a very disciplined process. Well done sir and thanks for sharing! |

More orbs...
Grapes with Orb 9.75" x 13.5" oil on shellacked paper. The support is a muted, desaturated digital print on Gatorboard with several coats of steel wooled shellac. For the first layer of paint, I used Graham's walnut/alkyd medium (dries overnight). For the final layer I used an amber/walnut/CB/spike medium (3 day dry time).
...and here is a stages of painting animation...

Nice grapes.
Is there a story behind the Orbs?
Are you enjoying actually finishing a work in less than a year |

The orbs are open to interpretation. They result from a single dream I had a number of years ago, which I believe relates to something in my childhood on a farm near a river outside of Hotsprings, VA.
I only had the dream once. It inspired subsequent orb pictures. I did several digitally. Now several in oil. The digitals can be seen here.
Yepsir... It's satisfying to get a painting done within a week or two... _________________ HonePie.com

How do you like the Graham oils? I use them personally but have a hard time finding them here in Sunny Orlando. I don't know many people who actually use them, but I find them much more fluid to work with, and with their alkyd medium almost as friendly with drying as acrylics. |

I pretty much use nothing but Grahams oil paints. Agreed... they are wonderful...and I think gaining in popularity. Their walnut/alkyd medium is being used more and more by some very good painters. _________________ HonePie.com

I heard about them first about 11 years ago when Graham and Co. visited my home town and invited art students and professors to a demonstration of all of his mediums. Impressed after his demo (and free starter set hand out, 12 tubes of either oil, acrylic or water), I pretty much have used nothing but his oils since, and try to convert as many of my friends as possible.
You have far more control than I do with the paints, it's inspiring to see such a talented digital artist be able to maintain the quality in traditional mediums, I worry that digital painting is slowly killing the art of traditional brush to canvas, but alas with master's like you there's nothing to worry about. |

Not to worry... ...for many young'uns today, digital will be the training ground for their future as traditional media painters.
If you are a painter, there is nothing like the feeling you get when you've finished a single piece and know it is completely unique in today's modular world. _________________ HonePie.com

Wow man you are as good with oils as with the wacom pen, I'm like "how did he get color dodge to work in oils??"
Did you have a small spot light to light up the objects or did you have to imagine that? Wow just saw the animated Gif! very nice to see since I think oils is right up there with aquarelle when it comes to difficult medium. thanks for sharing!
keep up the good work! _________________ www.johnliberto.com |

It's interesting that I've shown and explained the process I'm using to make these oil paintings on several art forums, most of which are traditional materials forums, but also here and on eatpoo. There's this guy on eatpoo with the moniker "peepee" who has been conducting an ongoing discussion to try and persuade me that what I'm doing is not painting. http://www.eatpoo.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=1266
It is ironic that the art forum that has taken up the cause to downplay my oil painting is mainly a digital forum...
BTW... It's been a while since I posted on eatpoo... what happened to it? _________________ HonePie.com

Ack! Thats a picture of you from the 70's, thats awesome. The longest my hair got was in 1982, it was maybe 1" shorter than that picture. Back to read the thread.
Well I have no comment about that mess.
Thanks for the detail image of that leaf. Its a much better look at what you are painting on than the animated gif. |

Assuming you're interested in feedback:
I'm less keen on this one than the first one. Some things that come to mind:
. It's all very bright. There's no drama in the use of light and shade. It looks a bit like what you'd get from a camera with too much ambient light.
. I really don't like the color of the table.
. Not sure about red drapery behind red fruits.
. The fruit looks dry and withering. With your bowl of grapes you really want to see nice wet highlights and vibrant translucence, to make you want to eat them. There's no punch in these grapes, and there's not much sense that the light of the orb is as bright as it looks like it should be.
Those are my reactions anyway. _________________ Art Links Archive -- Artists and Tutorials |
