You know what I miss seeing here? Visual storytellers.

One thing that made Spooge special was the fact he didn't just paint cool images--he told stories with his images. There were premises with characters in the middle of something, not just cliched armored futuristic soldiers in various scenes or some ultra wide-angle shot of some sci-fi/fantasy scenery. Sure, he did those too, but those were just a fraction of what he did.

I always felt that if you're going to spend the time working on an image for yourself, why not make them tell stories? One thing I see so rarely around here is good visual storytelling with real emotional weight or intruguing premise.

I think you should join us, and show us what you mean. I see a lot of stories on the last couple of pages. It sounds like you want us to stop posting unless we provided you with what you see as a good story. Now I know what you meen and I have made my share of storyboards for films- but I think you are wrong when you say that storytelling in an image is everything. Wink

Lunatique - I think You are right. Many works here are technically good [even extremely good Smile ], but something is missing. Some emotional potential behind a picture wihch is clearly visible in Craig Mullins works. Some emotional tension - like a frame from the movie with a story behind it. Craig doesnt tell the story directly, viewer has to surmise what heppens... he just give some guidelines. I think this is the power...

Of course many pictures has that emotional background... and still this thread is most inspirational thread I ever seen Smile.

Thank you guys
Smile

And I am trying to retell Akira. Well, you have a point, lunatique. I love art that tells stories myself - trying more in that regard!

lemur, nice start on something there! i'm curious which program and brushes you're using.. painter?

thanks, I use photoshop cs, sometimes port it over to painter to scribble around with the unfocused crap- the last one had one of my previous paintings overlayed on it, although I want to learn to get the effect with just straight up painting.

Lunatique- Thanks for the reminder of storytelling, I get so caught up in what I'm doing that I forget the most important part. Now to learn how to tell a story, yikes!

I do feel a bit weird commenting in this thread since I almost never post anything in it (and now that I've made a career change to composer instead of artist, it'll be even less likely). I wasn't saying an image has no value unless it's telling a story--just saying that we see so much of similar concept art type of images in here that it almost feels more like a concept art thread as opposed to simply a general broad speedpaint thread, where anything goes. I certainly do enjoy all the concept art stuff too, and this thread is a living legend that just keeps rocking on (other forums have tried and failed to match the excitement of this thread).
