You know what I miss seeing here? Visual storytellers.
One thing that made Spooge special was the fact he didn't just paint cool images--he told stories with his images. There were premises with characters in the middle of something, not just cliched armored futuristic soldiers in various scenes or some ultra wide-angle shot of some sci-fi/fantasy scenery. Sure, he did those too, but those were just a fraction of what he did.
I always felt that if you're going to spend the time working on an image for yourself, why not make them tell stories? One thing I see so rarely around here is good visual storytelling with real emotional weight or intruguing premise. |
thnx. it was kinda...inspirational |

If you spend a long time on a super polished piece, you will get faster at it so I'm told. _________________ Art |

Ditlev> i LOVEEE it! good job. I especially like the structure's design- the one in the foreground, and its palcement in the painting.i also like the overall mood and everything.
a sawzall. done for my design process form class at AC. 20 mins- already had a tight pen drawing laid out that i scanned in and just added values over.

I'm glad I can connect to sijun again, 'been missin this thread:
jgwong - love the concept, hilarity
Paoo - nothin but love, as usual. The highlight bloom is a nice touch!
Sampsonreaper - really diggin that one
fernstrom - the boat atmosphere is EXCELLENT
Raybender- absolutely love the landscape but I kinda wish the tripod werent there ;P
Petri - good quickies!
farvus - cool style, reminds me of blade runner for some reason.
raybender again - great color
fernstrom again - simple, and VERY effective. nice.
raytoh - LOVE the giant, very cool
here's my doodle for the night ... tried to be a little bit more stylistic this time, but I'm running into a lil artist's block. bleh.
Matty - if you're workin from photos for the portraits, try to paint the shapes of the light, instead of the lines of the face. Right now it seems like you're a little unsure of the general topology of the face. Look at the portrait I posted here - now squint and notice how the light is used to define things.
Notice how the lips/chin area can be relatively easily defined with a brush stroke for the upper lip (because its rare that light comes from beneath) and a brush stroke for the shadow under the lower lip.
I think that you might be jumping into things a little too quickly - firstly (and forgive me if I'm wrong here) I think you're boxing yourself in by restraining yourself to only 20 minutes. As has been said already, speed comes with time and practice. Secondly, I think you're being confused by color, and I was happy when I saw the portrait you did in black and white.
I think you should work solely in black and white for a while, both linework and lightwork. (that is, experiment in only with line, and then only painting shapes of light)
also if and when you work from a photograph, make sure the light doesn't flatten the image - pictures with flash are HORRIBLE to work from - they actually hide detail and inhibit understanding. Try to use pictures with a bright single source of light, thats not head on.
keep at it _________________ Zombat
