Not to good with names, but the madonna one is a dead giveaway.
The tough thing about the Madonna image though is that it is partially graphic, absolutely black and white, then you introduced a middle tone, but it doesn't work all that strong with the black and white. It's kinda like two different thought processes criss crossing at the same time, but the graphic part is dominating. The image would hold up much better if you went one way or another, but not both.
My only other comment on it would be that her nostrils are a bit big, and not very symmetrical to one another. Nostrils in the middle of the page tedn to become two black dots in the center of the page, they can become distracting. What I would do, if you choose not to go the graphic direction, would be to air out the black, or make it lighter in value so the stark graphic rounded shapes don't vie for competition with the rest of the image. Make th eyes the center of attention. That is where the most emotion and depth in a portrait occurs...
Great attempts otherwise... |

I'm guessing the first one is Heather Locklear. And the second is obviously Madonna as Fred commented. As for his comments on the actual Madonna piece, I have to disagree in a couple of areas.
First off, this piece almost feels like a semi-caricature approach as opposed to straight portrait. If this were the case, then some of Fred's suggestions might not be appropriate.
I DO, however agree with the addition of the middle gray tone being a little distracting, but even more so is the inconsistent black (especially around the neck) I realize that getting an extremely flat solid black tone is difficult unless you're using charcoal, ebony or a 6B pencil.
Cleaning that up would enhance the piece tenfold.
Onto the facial anatomy...Taking into consideration the almost cartoonish feel I have no problems with the nostrils being as large as they are. Making the eyes the focus would be a good suggestion, however they are looking off the frame of reference and therefore inherently lose some of the connection to the viewer. This pencil rendering, in structure alone, captures the feel of Madonna in a very loose manner. Very "Ray of Light"
Personally, holding this up to TeAnne's previous "Rooster" pic I think she hit a homerun! Clean up the values a tad and you have a portfolio piece. |

Thank you both for the comments which I have taken on board for future refference.
I have posted the pic of Madonna so you can compare the two.
And yes, the first one is Heather.

You need to complete the shape of the pupils in the eyes also. I just saw that. They are not completed at the bottom of the arcs, and it breaks up the form.
The hair shapes too are a bit ambiguous compared to the photo. Hair is difficult, but if you break it down into simplified shapes also, you might have a better go at it. Thanks for posting the photo, it definitely helps in figuring out what might have slipped by you...again, nice job on these |

TeAnne: These are great! The sketches really convey the character & emotion well.
I would do some female sketches but I'm terribly shy, hee hee .

Okay, here's one.
It started out as Lady Jessica from DUNE but ended up looking more like Rachel from Bladerunner.
It was done using an airbrush and Parker Quink Ink.
