Eh, neither can I... I can't get them to look round. Fred had a nice eye tutorial, but it didn't really cover shading them to make them look round. |

By "round" I meant spherical, not circular. |

A few things that will help:
1) The overall shape of the eyes is defined by the eyelids.
2)If you keep the tone correct, you can shade the whites of the eyes just fine. This is easier in color paintings.
3)The highlight on the eye should be just like it would be on a flattened sphere-curving around the contour. It should also extend from the colored area to the white without a break.
4)The color should be brightest on the exact oposite side as the highlight(light passes through the transparent "mound" on the front of the eye-where it hits first it makes a highlight, then where it ends up hitting the opaque color it lights that part up).
There's more to it, but maybe someone would like to illustrate it? I don't have time right now.

ok here
explanation at bottom.....
ok, uhm this was to colour eyes so i assume you already have the basic shape which is easiest seen in eye 1 & 2, where if you see, its rouded out already beacause of the shape of the uh... white part? hehe whats that called... anyways... everything in an eye is usually rounded, hardly any strait lines....
ok, now the shines make it even more round cause if you compare 1,2 to 3. you can see the first two look rounder so, like in all them shape tutorials, its called an eye BALL for a reason, make highlights that are spherical, not flat.
ok, basic shading, the bottom three, this is just my style i dunno if its right or not, but i like it hehe. on the white part of the eye i shade with a light grey from the eyelid down, this again helps with the spherical stuff, because you shade in an arc, usually i dont shade it more than halfway down the eye, this also makes the white highlights on the eye pop out more...
now on the uh... hehe coloured part, i again put a darker shadow at the top, but thats cause right now shes lookin up, you dont have to do that if you have your... dammit is it pupil? or iris... anyways, you dont have to if its not looking up, or touching the eyelid...
then i shade outside to in, dark to light. because thos makes the middle part pop out more and apear to be more of a bump on the actual eye, which if you check Freds tutorial, you'll see it actually is a bump on the actual eye...
hmmm hope this was a little helpful...

uh... Fred, weren't you up to a follow up of that heaad tutorial of yours? And on expanding on those abstractions for human figure drawings? ^_^ I think you are just too good on us. No pressure at all, just wondering if I missed some of those. Thanks a gazillion times for your time.

Your right Jorge. I am under the pressure of time. I think I have lots of i, and all that gets sponged up, then I see a point that I can type, and I end up going home from burnout of the day...believe it or not, I have a very difficult time typing. I get too out of control, fragment sentences, etc, and I need to take time and clean up the things I feel are very screwed up explanation wise...
the head tutorial I am doing all at once, and handing that off to immi. The tutorial Anticz is posting is tagged to the one I started a while ago, it belongs in a different tutorial all together. I am sure some of the info I have done for this new one will be divided for the anticz tutorial too, just laid out differently, and with different courses of action. Anyway, got to get back to environment sketches...have a great one... |

I think none of us is planning on dying tomorrow, so we can be a lot patient. Take it easy
Besides, if someone has the unfortunate luck of passing away, s/he won't give a damn about your tutorials, so more reason to take it easy
Thanks again

Here is the way I usally take, the basic approach is picked up from differnt sources I
cant remeber, but thanks to all of you.
With some modifications from time to time.
Some things to think of when dealing with eyse could be:
Imagining the eye as ball with thick visors, could help.
The eye is not symmetrical.
The upper lid is more arched, tho lower lid is more horizontal
The pupil is allways centered in the iris
and bla bla .....
But anyhow the basic process I do it is:
"Ohh and the Eye skin layer should be the top layer./And I allways work atleast 2*
the final rez and then resize down and using unsharp mask filter to sharpen things"
Use the gradiant tool making a sphere think of light direction since the highlight on
sphere will be highlight on eye.
New Layer..
Paint the eye Skin around the sphere shape try getting the feeling like if the paint
were clay and modell the eye around the sphere
New Layer..
Use circle tool make the Iris fill with color you feel the eye should have, but make it
a little darker. reselect and do a border, fill with same color as iris but very dark
allmost black.
New Layer..
Use cirkle tool make pupill place in center of Iris.
New Layer..
Make Iris Layer and Puplill Layer Color Burn in layers to get the white highlight to
shine through, then merge eyeball, pupil and iris layers (this is something that you will
have to fiddle a bit to get what you want)
Then I go in on the iris and pick the darkest value(not black) and start dotting away
in cirkles making it a little lighter using the black value in HSB, the closer you get to
the puplill the lighter it will get, after that i take the smallest soft brush and drag
from
lightest color to rim of iris.
And this should atleast get you started
Then I go over the eye again and fix up things like adding a little more white and
some thin red veins to the eyeball, tightning this up I guess.
I will try get a fast done picture serie up (really bad color choise on the iris I know, but hopefullly you will get my point) with this if I can get that ubb code working.
Hope this will help, and good luck,
DT
