This is a quick pic I did yesterday evening. I'm not very pleased with it because it doesn't look very real. I don't know how to get the light and shading right. It would be great if somebody could help me (perhaps a very very very quick paintover just to show how light and shadow look right).
Thank you.

As a stylized character image thats actually really nice.
If you want to increase the realism then it's really a matter of finetuning lighting reflections, edges, shading, and also using color in a more realistic manner.
For color, as Jason has often suggested, you can find an image from a classical painter that you like and reference that for colors.
To fine tune the other aspects, find a picture from a magazine/book/inet that is in roughly the same pose and really study the details. It's all in the details. Actually, I find that some of the images that Micke has posted are great for learning from because he very clearly suggests all the different angles, creases, and directions.

Thank you for your suggestions Sumaleth. Perhaps I should really draw from pictures or other sources to improve my skills. But I don't think that this one doesn't look real because of missing finetuning. The quick pics of micke, joachim ... look real without really being finetuned. This is what I wanted. A rough but real looking pic. The problem is that I don't know what's missing. |

I think realism (not necessarily photo-realism, but that which has a kind of 'real' quality) is a practice of subtlety. The trick is not including every detail (though that could work), but of including the right details. Like some of spooge's work, for instance, looks sketchy but at the same time there's something real about it (usually it's his incredible control over lighting).
It's hard to say generally what the 'right' details would be. The way to find out is through practice, or though the advice of artists who can articulate how to bring that real quality out (unlike me). All I can say is, good work so far! Post the new image if you make any changes.

I like this piece. It has a nice feel to it, even if that feeling isn't one of realism. Your style really reminds me Enki Bilal (and I think that's a good thing!).
Post your changes! |

not much time
very cool pic
don't see any big problems with the lighting
moreover the nose seems a bit strange in angle
and the area over her left eye seems also
a bit strange

Thank you all for your comments.
silber: you are right the nose is wrong. Looks like my own. And there's something wrong with one of the eyes too. I'll keep it in mind for the next quick face.
Justin: great self-portrait you posted. There were so many answers saying hey great. So I didn't want to be number thirty just saying excellent picture. You are right the important details are missing. I think I just have to draw more often to get that. I'll take a look at some pictures before starting my next one.
Solitaire: I know that it's no real B-Boy but I Thought that the name fits somehow. I did't post for a long time because I had to work very hard last week and I'm working on another picture which I don't want to show before I finished the foreground. What about meeting this weekend. Xoco are you in Hamburg? What about you Aimok?
By the way Solitaire the photo you posted (showing you lying in the grass a can of beer in your hand-was it taken at the Roskilde Festival?
Get-up Kid: I don't know why my style reminds you of Enki Bilal but yeah if I take a closer look at it you're right ;-).
TylerHunter: I'm not a breaker. But I might try a freeze if I have some time.
