Hey, I'm working on a picture of my girlfreind for our anniversary and I'd like to know what you all think. This is my first time trying the "mullins" technique. Normally I'm more comic book orientated, but since this was a "portrait" I decided to try something new.
I know some of the main proportions are off (like the width of her head), but do you see anything that looks really odd or out of place? I'm personally not thrilled with the hair, but I think it's at a point where it's passable. Oh, and in the final picture I'll have some shit in the background to blend her hair line in with a little more.
Oh and here is the original pic. I used it for reference a lot, but I didn't do a "paint over".
Thanks for any feedback you guys have,

Sap: Thanks... the whole picture is kind an odd mixed media thing that's been in progress for years (stopped working on it for a few). Only the portrait of my girlfriend is new. Guess I'll see how good everything looks when it's done.
n8: That's why I corrected myself and said that it was the Mullins technique, "not look". Meaning that I've used his technique of laying down the base shapes of light and dark using a big fat brush and then going in much closer at high resolutions to put in detail, but still with simple brush strokes. I've reduced the final picture many many times, you're seeing it at 72 dpi and scaled down. I worked on it at 600 dpi and larger in size. Take a closer look at the hair and you can still see areas of "sketchy" brush strokes. |

If you want to make it 'Mullins', make it far more sketchy and therefore lively. It would look better that way - I think anyway. Also black the background and make the hair all contasty to give it depth.

I'll start off with the stuff to change.
The drawing is much too thin. The reasons for this are that the area from her eyes down is too long and it should be slightly wider. Also the neck (on the left side) is wrong. If you look at the photo you will see just a bit of it on the far left side (peeking out from her black shirt). It needs to be that wide. Actually that's the beginning of her back, but you get the point.
Another thing you might want to do is to soften the edges on her hair. That way it won't look like it's been cut out. You can do this by using the smudge tool and the eraser.
Another thing is that her eyes (pupils and irises) need to be more prominent. They are too slim right now. They look like cat-eyes. You might want to add a highlight in there too.
Okay, so that is the only stuff that I'd suggest working on. And I want to say that it looks great. And she will be very proud of it. Girlfriends love it when you do that kinda stuff, also it gives you a chance to really take notice of what parts make them so attractive. So good luck, and show us the finished piece.
