Well Johannes.
It very much depends on what it is you want to do.
So far I think it looks like a string doll, correct me if I'm wrong.
It's much to early to say anything about it. |

I think corrections are already possible/necessary.
Maybe you should start with a mannekin frame.

Looks like you have a good concept in mind,
which is often the hardest part of any illustration. Now think about breathing some
life into this thing, with the face and hands. They are often the most daunting part, but certainly give any figure it's "oomph."
Good start. |

Hi there,
Wow it's so wonderful to just look at all your awesome images (I spent nights just looking at all the great pictures).
Every time I look at all these pictures I get inspired but I hardly take my pencil and try to realize my idea. And the times I do realize the ideas - I fail.
But okay - I've just had an idea and now want to do a picture step by step, but the first step (the sketch) is the part where i fail really often, so I ask you to just look at the following sketch and maybe give some feedback about the anatomy or anything else. I'm a beginner, but I can stand everything
Thank you for everything you post,
Johannes |

I remember when i first found this forum, i was here 24/7, its the best place to get enthused and learn about art, not all comments will be good but most people are friendly, remember that you wont be a rembrant in one day, take it slow and do the basics first! Then you can be as good as me! |

Hi nilpferd.
I see you're from vienna so I say some sentences in german to you, cause my english s****

My german is a bit rusty so I hope you'll forgive me if I got it all wrong
First off: Good going nilpferd for overcoming your fear and posting! Keep it up.
The thing I wanted to say is that over-refined drawings make for bad, bad pictures. That's me talking now, mind you, I'm sure there are millions of ways to make great artwork. I agree with most of what Max says, using pencil+paper+scanner is probably the best way to get things done, but this forum and the web in general is littered with pictures that would have benefited from less defined drawings.
The idea is that the process of painting is part planning, part accident. The planning part is boring and time-consuming. I don't like it, but sometimes it's necessary. the accidents make for the fun and interesting parts of painting pictures. what better way is there than to start with a big accident and work your way from there? =)
If you spend hours upon hours of making a nice sketch you will stick with it thoughout the painting. If the sketch is good you stand a decent chance at making a nice picture. But blocking shapes (and color for that matter) down too early will be a crutch for you, as you will get protective of the "finished" parts of the picture, making it difficult to spot errors in shape and color.
hope i make sense =)
But then, as Max said, do whatever makes you happy. That's what it's all about.
cheers,
/mon |

Shall I answer in english or german? My english isn't that good, but okay, I think it's more useful!
Michael la-Cour: Yop, it's a string doll, but when I make mistakes with the string doll the whole picture will be crap at the end so I post it at this early status.
AndyT: Thanks for the link, I just searched in google and found the loomis book for download, now I'm going to study this!
Damon: Yeah, the hands and the face are the parts where I almost make the picture look like it's done by a 3 year old...
THE LAST GOONIE: Agree. But I have to remember this every day
Max Kulich: Thanks for all your good advice, I just started another pic on paper, and I think this one will get better. It's just that I only have a scanner on the PC of my mother, so I have to scan it there, send it to myself, and then I can start to draw. But maybe I should take this effort and scan every pic.
Mon: Thank you too, It's often fun for me to draw, but the fun ends at a point where I can't realize what I want to draw. That's the point where I throw my paper away and destroyed the door of my wardrobe.
Thank you all for the good advice, 'till the next time
