man, you're right: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dan_Osman
I would never risk my life this way, I don't undrestand such people.
What he did is very careless. Nevertheless it's awesome. |

Careless? Sure, but it was his life after all and if it made him happy, that is all that matters. I think I can understand his motivation for that pretty much. A life less dangerous probably would have killed him too, just slower and with less fun in it. |

Agreed, man. How many of the people in heaven could TRULY say that they died while doing something that made them happy. |

Wow, how does one get the nerve to take a leap and just grab for a tiny ledge with a free climb? See that bit where he just jumps up? |

People have family! It's very egoistic to think you can do what you want with your life (e.g. end it carlessly) when you leave family behind. Okay, maybe this guy doesn't have anyone he loves (can't imagine that tho), that would be okay by me. However you can have fun differently without risking your life. I am sure he would have chosen his life when he knew he would die that day. I am very sure about that. Everyone would! Life is more important than fun after all.
Don't get me wrong. I still admire those people for what they can do. It's amazing. I wouldn't risk my life this way though. If painting was THAT dangerous I wouldn't paint. I would try to find somthing else fulfilling and do that insted. See what I mean? |

Well Max, this comes all down to character and attitude. Even if what he did was crazy in our eyes, he probably had less risk involved than when some people enter their car and drive somewhere. Of course one false move could cost your life in such a climb, but that guy was a pro. I read up on him when I saw that video for the first time some month or so ago. His death was, as far as I can remember, due to a failure of equipment in the sport he got to after he was done with the climbing, which was some kind of rope-jumping-freefall-thing. He lost his interest in climbing like that, because some guys did a record time on a route he worked out for ages.
But to get back to your statement about the egoism involved in that. I do think it is equally if not more egoistic of the people that love you to try to force you into a more safe and boring life. Also start to expand this and think about all those people with dangerous jobs or who do dangerous things for someone else. Cops, Soldiers, Firemen, Workers that handle hazardous materials or whose work environment is REALLY unfriendly. I'm pretty glad that not everyone has such a high threshold of safety requirements. The only thing that made him different from those mentioned above is that he did it for fun instead of money or social responsibility. Does that make him a bad guy? I don't think so. |

Gotta go with gLitterbug. It is better to let those around you know for sure who you are so they can choose the level of their bond with you. After that it is all fate. _________________ HonePie.com

Well I think I have to agree with some of the things you said however I still think someone has to take responsibility not only for his but for the lifes of other people involved.
Of course it's not good to force someone into a boring life. But we're not talking about a bit of fun. This is EXTREME! As I said, you can do other things which are not that dangerous and still have fun. There is a point you shouldn't go beyond because it doesn't get that much better anyway.
I don't think he's a bad guy. However there IS a difference in doing it for social responsibility as you said yourself or just for yourself.
eyewoo: Somtimes it's not that easy. What if your son or daughter begins to do such things and gets more and more extreme? Would you just look and say nothing? You can't always choose the kind of relationship you want. |

Max... That is, indeed, when relationship can become very difficult and complex. It is also the uncomfortable edge where much understanding and learning often takes place. It is not boring, but part of the many brilliant spikes of living that are the fuel of fate... OMG... I think I'm waxing poetic.
Anyway... that's life _________________ HonePie.com

Yeah, I am sure you know what you talk about since you have MUCH more experience than me in inter-personal relationships. I am mostly just talking about theory. lol. You're right, something like this can get very complex. |
