Here's a track from the Galactic Melee score (MMO space shooter game) I'm working on at the moment:
http://www.ethereality.info/ethereality_website/music/2003-present/galactic_melee/Galactic_Melee-Main_19-FinalMaster2.mp3
It's the main music and will be used throughout all the menu option screens. It's a mixture of electronic, orchestral strings, glitch, and industrial. I originally wanted something more understated, but then I remembered that some of the games I really liked actually had pretty intense menu music that really puts the player in the mood for some action. The glitch elements are my attempt to incorporate the idea the in space combat, damage and mechanical failure is a common occurrence.
Anyway, just wanted to share it, as this is my first time scoring a game.
EDIT:
Ok, I have uploaded a version with almost all the obvious glitch elements gone:
http://www.ethereality.info/ethereality_website/music/2003-present/galactic_melee/Galactic_Melee-Main_19-FinalMaster3_NoGlitch.mp3
Do you guys prefer with or without glitch?
EDIT 2:
Ok, I did a final version that takes into account some of your helpful feedback:

I also added a bass as the track was missing the bottom end. Originally I was afraid adding a bassline would muddy things up too much, but I got it to sit just right. I tried all kinds of different stacked synth sounds and finally got something that's closer to what I originally intended for the synth melody part. I think the rhymic dropping out I did also made that section more interesting than before. Apparently that was the weakest link in the chain according to most (here and other forums), but now I don't think it is anymore. The one place I kept a full-out glitch was right before the guitar kicks in--everywhere else I made sure it only happened on certain layers.
Good news is, the client really liked it, so mission accomplished. So that's one down, and the rest of the score to go...

I really love it. Drums are always nice, I love them, especially in electronic music (Drum'n'Bass anyone?). The Industrial parts are cool as well.
What I didn't like is the synthie-melody (strings). The low parts are ok, but the high and pitched ones sound a little bit like a Nintendo soundtrack or Trance-music. IMHO, this really runs down the whole composition, which is awesome! _________________ CA SB|Flickr |

Thanks for the comments!
Did any of you find the glitch elements out of place or took you by surprise? Some other forums had comments like that.
Jabo - can you specify when in the track are the stuff you didn't like? Are you talking about the synth melody that starts at 0:48? Or are you talking about all the orchestral strings? |

Oh, the glitches are part of it? I actually thought I had a bad connection. Yeah, I'd be tempted to rethink those bits. _________________ Art Links Archive -- Artists and Tutorials |

Cool track. I couldn't listen to the one without glitches because the file isn't there, but i imagine it'd be better without them. |

The file is there now. I had a naming error, but it works now. Give it a try and let me know which you prefer. |

I thought a little bit about it and yeah, the version without glitches might be better. Altough I have to say that I didn't even notice them the first time since theres so much flow anyway. |

Hey Lunatique
I listened to the one with the glitches this morning, and it hought my computer was acting up. It seemed to be abrupt.
I defintiely like the one without the glitches. this is way too awesome. No complaints here. Beautiful composition. |

As already stated, I thought it was my computer messing up too. There was a less disturbing glitch at about 85-90% through that seemed ok.
If you want to make a glitch that cuts out some portions of the sound but keeps others going that might be ok. Dropping to total silence is weird.
So maybe drop out all the main music but put in some... something, thats your job so that it isnt 100% silent. Not static, maybe some of those buzzes. |
