Do you costantly walk around when you try to paint something? I do... I'll paint for a few minutes, have a look at the whole image, get up and stroll around the apartment a bit and then come back to apint some more. It usually only happens with pieces I'm fairly happy with as they progress. Am I alone with this?

I find that when I'm "in the zone" sorta.. I get up like every 5-10 minutes and do a happy walk. Keeps the juices flowing and helps to keep me from over analyzing what I just drew.

Yeah... It's just that I often don't even notice it until I've already walked off a bit...

Hmm. Never for me. I just start something, and 'wake up' hours later (usually because I'm thirsty/hungry/have to change CD/go to the washroom/etc.). Actually, time goes by so darn fast while I draw, it's not even funny. I think I've been drawing for 10 minutes when in fact it's like 30.
I think the idea of getting up, and focusing on something else, both visually and mentally for a small while really helps with the development of a picture. I should put an alarm clock on my desk to get me to take breaks. =))

Like Frost, time goes by really damn quick when I draw. Last night, I continued working on a pic that I'm doing, at about 10:30pm -- I looked at the clock a moment later (or so I thought) and it was 12:30 AM =P
As for getting up and walking around -- I usually get some sort of soft-drink or a snack to munch on a few times in the middle of my drawing.

Do you mean when you're 'painting' on the computer or actuall real painting?
I find that I cannot get in depth w/ my digital art. But my traditional art, I'm in a whole other world with that. I have to work on the floor, or if there's no space on the floor then I'll sit on the bed. I won't sit at a table or a desk and draw or paint... for some reason I have to be right up close with what I'm working on... like 'one' with the work... And time goes by fast, and things happen all around me that I don't take any notice of... which is why I cannot usually work on any art unless my daughter is sleeping
Back to the origional question, yes when I am doing a drawing or water color, ink... what ever... I take a break, walk around and come back to find a new perspective. Correct all my errors and things that look stupid or cheesy... sometimes I will just get angry all together and crumple it and throw it across the room... but that's usually when I find myself drawing the same stupid thing... over and over and over again... makes me angry like I can't go beyond that high school level point...

I listen to music while I draw so sometimes I'll take a break and put on something more upbeat (when I draw I listen to mellow techy kind of stuff like Aphex Twin or Orbital) and just lay back and look at my drawing and 99% of the time i'll have some epiphany for how to improve it.
If that doesn't work I shoot meth amphetamine into my eyes and watch Full House...

yeah! i do that too.. usually when i'm on cloud 9, i'll be really happy with my art and get up to get a drink or just take a walk, and i'll leave the picture open to fit my monitor size.. then as i get back from my walk i'll look up and absorb the first impression of my image, noticing what i need to change and maybe even add. |

i always catch myself needing to remove myself from the painting/model or whatever it is im creating every so often. i guess thats a big reason i started smoking...it's comming to a point where i think and reflect better to what im doing if i take a 'fresh air' break every 30 mins *gasp* yeah i know, unhealthy. i also leearned a trick from one of the gameart.com guests who said to invert the verticle perspective on the painting every so often, gives you a whole new perspective. give it a try everyone i also ask my friends on icq for suggestions, i like to ask non-artists cuz they are my target audience, and tho they cant tell me what to fix, they can tell me whats wrong. Am i alone with my habbits *Ross prays* plz say it aint so :P

If I'm trying to do a good pencil sketch by copying from a magazine picture (to improve my skills)I'll just sit there until it's done or for about 4-5 hours. Then I go to sleep and finish it in the morning. |

Yeah. Me too. I usually go downstairs and have a drink every 10-20 minutes, and once the picture is done, I have to pee like hell |
