For Those of you who draw/sketch on neutral colored paper.. say various shades of grey, what do you use to do highlights and such?
I hear that using grey paper as opposed to white has advantages because you're "starting on middle ground" and can move to darks and lights, instead of building up dark tones only, depending on the white of the paper. However, white colored pencil really doesn't do so well, and chalks are messy.. any advice?

Aiko said it well. I'll just add that you could try white conte crayon. It's sort of like a pastel, but not quite so messy. You could also wrap masking tape around your pastels if you don't like getting powder on your hands.
I prefer the before mentioned rubbing of vine charcoal into white paper. Then you can "draw" with your erasers and charcoals. It's fun.

When using half-tone paper you want to have something for highlights and a shade or 2 darker then the paper for the shadow tones. If white pencil crayon doesnt werk chalk, conte, pastel, white ink or guache. Chances are your paper sucks...i used white pencil on my half toines and it worked like a dream, get some cold-pressed illustration board, if that doesnt work goto a printing store and ask for paper they use as a backdrop for spray mounting, its this cheap brown stuff thats GREAT halftone paper, if u got an art school u can goto the fume hood and just steal the paper yiourself (this is what i do)
if u need some help with half tone drawing, stay tuned, im writting a huge drawing tutorial for 3dpalette.com...i started it just today...should be done by the weekend.

White guache maybe, I usually use white chalk in pencil form or a white berol colored pencil. If you use white paper and tone it yourself with charcoal ie. grind it in with a cloth, its really great cuase you can erase the charcoal and also add more layers. Also just working a dark background is a good experience too. My favorite is a deep blue with various light colors. You can get about 10-20 different shades of grey with Berol or Prismacolor colored pencil.
Hope this helps
