The recent post by amnesia reminded me of this old picture I did back in 95. I became utterly facinated with Stereograms and started experimenting with how they were made, figured it out, started drawing them by hand, then "stepped up" to make them digitally in ... paintbrush. I was crazy like that as a kid. Anyways, near the end of my obsession my parents bought me a cheapy stereogram creation program. It let me do far more complicated creations than I'd been able to do before and I loved it for the time I played with it.

If you're having trouble figuring out wtf this is, go here for the height map I used.

Most likely you were trying to force your eyes to cross. This is the wrong method(well, reverse method). You should look straight through the picture until your eyes unfocus, then you'll see it. I've always liked these things.

In all my life viewing these things, I've never been able to pick out an image... All I see is a huge mess of crap. Are there any tricks to seeing the hidden image?

synax, find any two matching colors or "spots" on the image, then cross your eyes (dont really cross em, but make your eyes cross the images into each other)

for this image, i looked near the top, about 48 pixels down, at the yellow+black blotch, and used me eyes to merge two of them together. then i look at the rest of it and you can see the hidden image bulge out.

however, this one sucks (no offense cyber) because its very hard to make the image out, and it doesnt look like a fist (which he wanted it to be). it looks like a circle with a hole in it.

klaivu: Yeah, the ones you usually see are done by rendering an image in some sort of rendering packager using depth greyscale instead of lighting it. A program is then used to generate the final. The method it uses to do this is pretty damn simple, though a bitch to explain.

ex: A bargin bin program called "stereogram". That and height maps drawn in paintbrush.

I've gotten really really good at seeing these... to the point that I can just look at one and alter the possition of my eyes in an instant to view the picture. It only takes me as long as it does to blink. A shit load of practice, and a little luck is all it takes.

Synax: a lot of people have problems focusing when their eyes are not looking at the same logical spot. It takes a lot of practice to train your eyes to focus correctly on an imaginary point in front of the point your eyes are pointing at.

psi burn: I never said it was any good, I just said it was a stereogram.
The biggest problem is that computer monitors don't have anywhere near the resolution of print, so images tend to be less defined and heights are more easily distinguishable (instead of the smooth, round appearance of most magic eye images).

If anyone is curious how these things work, I'll be glad to explain it.

The only bad thing about this is that it's of something extremely vague. The enjoyment of a Stereogram is suddenly identifying the object in stereo. (i.e a Shark, or the Statue of Liberty, etc..) A fist with some broken shards around it is a bit hard to decipher. I personally thought it was a crappy pic of Stonehenge until I viewed the original art. BUT..that's not to say this program could be pretty cool.
