Okay this is my attempt at going the tonk with the mighty spooge.
(As if )
Used Photo ref. Not necessarily because I can't draw from life. I am short sighted, and my latest prescription is getting a bit ineffective. too much 'putering I suppose
Anyway it alows me to see a few more details a bit easier.
I's suffering from that "taken indoors" look but I kinda like it that way.
It was an Illustration task that I twisted around to suit my own desires (love it when that's possible)
Small
Big
I know it's not the most exiting pic and I've muffed it in a few places. but I'd apreciate comments as always.

I like, the "indoor photo" color doesn't bother me at all. I wish my keyboard was like your though-so much easier when there are just two huge buttons, instead of all these little ones! But I think you're definately on the right track in PS, and I like the way it looks like the computer's gonna slide of the desk at first.

Looks accurate enough. Did you learn anything?
I think one of the points of this is working from life. As you did this from a photo, there are a lot of areas underexposed that just goes flat, like the keyboard. Photos just flatten out everything. Look at the real thing and really look at it. Let you eye see what it there. You will be amazed at what the camera leaves out. Later when you paint from your head (or photos) you will have this rich experience of what things really look like to draw from. You will be much further ahead. You can see and copy shapes really well at this point. This is your next step.
Try to set up some junk from your kitchen in a still life and paint that from life.
If you have any dolls or action figures, paint that. If the concept artists out there are listening, this is a great way to see what some of those "concept-like" forms really look like. |

Apreciate the comments
spooge- I learn't a LOT from doing this. I mean I've heard you going on about all that stuff, but dismantling a photo and putting it back together like this really made it fall down into place. I was amazed at how good it looked after I'd put down the flat colour. Just the shapes and value give such a good representation. I heard what you said in Bg's thread about the difference between film and the eye and I did notice what you were talknin about. The next thing I'll try is to paint it from life.
I also think that I wasted a lot of time doing details that wern't needed, haveing a look at your old enter screen with the G3 I'm amazed at what is possible with so little.
Did you set that up as a still life or what?

Hmm. I'll think I'll do some still lifes too. Rinaldo, they may qualify as speed pics if you want to post them in that thread |
