I do. My drawing teacher says blending looks like shit. I disagree. Don't get me wrong, crosshatching can look great, but we are currently shading primitives and we aren't allowed to blend at all.
I can understand not blending with your fingers, since that can lead to unerasable smudges and fingerprints. But I've gotten some of my best results with stumps.
Bah, if I draw one more primitive I'm going to puke. I hate college.

I would think learning all the different types of shading and what not would be a good thing. Maybe later down the road you'll have to recall what you learned from this exercise... Think about it in the long run, what you learn from this might be used in another project for a job you would need to do.
/me wishes he was in college... DOH!

My art teachers never really had a problem with blending, unless that was ALL a student did. Learning variety is good, and (especially in a class), once you learn one thing well, it's time to move on to something you can't do.
... But if your teacher is saying you can't blend just because he/she doesn't like the way it looks, that's pretty goofy. |

Take a look through my gallery at the pieces I have on 40lb cotton paper done with graphite... http://www.ramenbudget.com/fabrica.html -- None of those pics used a blending stump. The three pencils I use, are .3 .5 mechanical, and a 6b woodless. No blending involved...

Ooh, I remember this. I think your teacher is right. He's trying to teach you to control a medium, to learn to render. Control it, then disobey if you see fit. Just my two cents.
