Yeah, maybe if you added some simple highlights on the side of the face that isn't in in the shadow you could get rid of that "too dark" feeling while still preserving the mood...

i think it looks cool when an object casts shadows upon itself...but if you were just doing a rendering to show the model then maybe you did the right thing...

I think that instant black to white trasitions make things look realistic...specially when shadows are casted on other objects....hard to get out of the habit of smudging everything up and leaving har ...
