Yeah, maybe if you added some simple highlights on the side of the face that isn't in in the shadow you could get rid of that "too dark" feeling while still preserving the mood...

i think it looks cool when an object casts shadows upon itself...but if you were just doing a rendering to show the model then maybe you did the right thing...
