the rest of the body is simplified so the same goes with the hands.. it has to do with the level of detail on the character. If mickey had 5 fingers, it would stand out..

it might also help to study the planes of the skull first.. knowing which bones of the skull are visible on the face helps a lot

learn how to paint with traditional paints for a couple years.. (its not that bad! images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif ) then you could apply it to Painter or photoshop...
