Hahah...shape design. If we are actually talking about the whole design aspect of those compositions...than number 1 is the winner by far. I don't know if this is entirely intentional but it's got flow, a great focal, perfect use of negative space (breaking the space up into 3 parts), and excellent cropping. Not to mention the color use (red) brings you right into the focal.
If it had some text it would be a great ad as a piece of design.

I thought spooge explained everything pretty well in his judging. I like kurisu's pic. I think it is very original no matter what means he used to create it. micke's was my favorite, but it was lacking a few things.

Craig:
I meant no offense, really, and I think you did a good job overall, as it shows you'rr unbiased on the medium or method. It's not really fair to hold one judge accountable for the results, and I hope you don't feel that any pitch forks are directed at you for it. I just have my own issues regarding 'how' it was done, and I've brushed the issue of zbrush in the past, and my oppinion has not changed since, .. my own little demons to deal with I guess (I just felt you were cheated yourself into thinking it was 'painted').

I sincerely hope you don't feel regret for having agreed to being judge and certainly hope you don't feel my/our comments to be a pointing finger at you personally. You're a priceless help and inspiration to most of us, respect can be the only outcome.

cheers,
frost.

Nice to hear your explanation spooge, not that I ever did disagree or disrespect your discition, but it did make a lot of sense...I really like that both idea, taste and "un-cheezyness" did matter just as much as how good the pic was techniquewise...and also that what medium used didn't matter ( I like that ).

Hah...
As nice a read this thread might be, this "argueing" is about as meaningfull as the 'What's your favorite music' thread.

The endless mindnumbing debate about what's art and what not, what's bad, good, better or best rages on...

sigh..

Spooge Demon,

I've read only yoshi part, ehehe, I may not know 5 % of what you know, honestly, but you're not going to tell me that a banana looks likes like a cucumber, that was the case with your comments. True, everyone thinks that they have a good taste, its not something you can see. Who's the Grand high Pooh Bahh of all things aesthetic time will tell. Purpose of my post was to voice my disagreement, not discuss thing that you're unaware of.

I'm very happy that i reached no.3
It was a fun competition and i hope it will
be more of it, but with another theme.
Nothing with Dragons, barbarians and naked chicks and sci fi, hehe. I'm so tired of it.

My two cents...

my order of preference is

2 tie
3 tie
1

the last image could use an overall unifying value pattern. The figure field is stronger in number two and three.

I agree with craig that idea is as important as execution. However...I do feel that composition of value is what holds a good piece of art together and structure and figure field needs to be considered as well.

all three were strong.

nice stuff.
