Me and micke has started this agreement that we will give eachother drawingtasks of things we know the other one has problems to execute. For me it's technical design stuff, so he wanted me to do a astronaute type of character in a cockpit. And, I asked micke to make some sort of braveheart setting with characters in a huge background.
Anyway, here's my picture. The sketch and also a very rough colored version. Input, ideas etc are very welcome

we will continue this process as long as we have extra time for personal work. It's a great exercise.

Looks like you removed alot of the nifty little line work in the original sketch. The sketch looks better "technical" wise in my opinion. Its better than I could do though.

Wow, Joachim! You argue that your problems are in techincal designing... I don't believe that.

Humm... this is really nice one. I haven't any suggestion for this but I just wanted to say I like it a lot. Nice colors. Very moody.

I'm looking forward to see your next exercise.

agree with scoop

seriously, it is very well executed , it seems like you have done this your entire life . concept design seems so hard to do, i mean so much detail and technical stuff without any reference , I admire.

It seems to me like the cockpit is too big and sort of an odd shape. It's almost like the cockpit is a square and the pilot is sitting in one of the corners. Shouldn't the cockpit be sort of rectangular with the pilot sitting against the back wall instead? If those jet engines were positioned by the glass of the cockpit there, the pilot would get seriously fucked up when they tried to fly the thing.

And, if my previous statements ring true, then the windows on the side of the cabin should come out at the viewer at a much greater angle...

This is great Joachim
You never stop to impress me heh.

I really like the glassy surface of the helmet. But I agree with the engines.
The cockpit would get sucked into them =)

mesa like. Me no like his bluish, grey face.

a pulled up shot with more dramatic perspective is what it needs, but no one listens to me anyway so i'll just mosey along...

Joachim-

I don't think you have a problem drawing tech. I think everything you're doing is looking really solid. What I think it is missing, are some 'bigger'/'bolder' shapes within your general structure.

I tried to do a small rough of it to get the idea across. What I was trying to do is, have bigger rectangular shapes portruding and receeding, thus hoping to increase the claustrophobia and interest of the cockpit itself. I also tried to establish planes separating other shapes, like establishing a small backwall partition, increasing the wire/pipe sizes, having the armrests of the cockpit chair break the open space up a bit, etc.

Here's the pic, I know it sucks, but I hope the idea sort of comes across...

ooh, lotsa answers. I'll take the one by one.

scoop, hehe, yes I do.

chapel, yes I agree. the coloring was a quick one. And, to make sure all those details would come in to the coloring, goes beyond my patience

Grendel Khan, thx !

yourmum, thanks for the encouragement. I really think I have, because I'm struggling when I'm doing it.

yoshi, thx, and I agree.

toast!, thx.

robt, thanks a lot.

burnout, thanks. Yes, I think these exersices are very good for improvement. You should try it

sear, thx

A.buttle, I agree, but didn't understand it all. For me it seem like the cockpit is rectangular with him, though he is stretching for that button, which makes him more to the left. But, else than that, I think you have some very good points. Hehe, maybe he is pushing that red button to try out the shuttle for the first time, but the desigfn don't work, so he will be blown away by the jet engines..the picture is now called "just before the explosion"

nori, thx !

sporq, thx. Didn't quite understand what you meant about the eyes. My vocabulary isn't that great. Use baby language

binke, thx a lot. Hehe, read my answer to a.buttle about the engines

superbug, thx, yeah that's a good idea, to increase the FOV to get a more dramatic view. Actually I wanted to to that all the way from beginning, but since this is something I struggle with, I wanted to focus more on the technical part than struggling with the perspective as well

liquid! Thanx a lot. Great overpaint. Totally different way of coloring it, I like that. I think what you did by adding those chearhandles made the whole cockpt thing more compact, something I really tried, but never came up with some good idea. ALso, tha tupe going from his helmet and all the way up to the roof is a great idea. Gimenez did that in the fourth power comic, the whole helmet was a part of the cockpit....the more connection the cooler.

surferboi, thank you.

sa'ge, I agree with you. THat's one of the things I need to improve a lot on. to be more able to design retro future, post app. future, etc...to have more vision and taste when I draw techincal stuff.

tinusch, thx.

whoa, great work!

nothing else to say--

oh wait..
did you try rotating the picture a few degrees to the side? The pilot looks somehow horrified like he just found out some serious problem.. maybe rotating the canvas a bit would make it look more drastic?

great picture.. looking forward to micke's scene then

that's some seriously cool stuff you've got going Joachim.

Only crit I could come up with is the blue lighting seems very dark in places. the blue is next to very light colours but it stays very dark. it doesn't look "lit" to me, especialy around the right (our) side of the helmet where you have the blue near very lit white areas. it looks very dark and dirty. I think that it would be lighter there. just a thought, I'm not all that up on stuff like that, but it looks kinda wrong to my eyes.

I haven't seen it. Gimenez used to do Metabarons, right? [sorry to sound lame, but when we started to write our own stuff, I just completely stopped reading any other stuff] I do like the 'you are the machine - the machine is you' theme though... But mainly I just wanted to have bolder shapes defining the overall structure... maybe even have HUD's in front of him, or fold-out screens covering parts of him up for compositions sake...

I forgot to say, but for some reason the pic reminds me of something from syd mead

[p.s.] i think liquid nailed the lighting in his overpaint. it seems like a cockpit in space would be very dark, and the console light would really stand out. plus the harsh light coming in the window would make some crisp edges.

great mood there liquid.

All I can crit is the perspective looks slightly odd on those engines. And I'd define the shape of the helmet a little more with a highlight of the blue lightsource on the backwall. Apart from that it's totally awesome, I couldn't do as good, so just ignore me...

hey joachim, really nice work man. Looks like you went more
Spooge painting style than your usual stuff with this, Worked
out really well. One thing that looks abit dodgy to me is the
guys face in the helmet, his head seems too low, like he would
not have much of a neck. maybe would be better just to put some
cool light reflections from the lights around him in the cockpit
'stead of having his face.. anyways keep up the goodwork!
