I concur with demigodfromdisney.
Joachim, I totally agree with you.
Come on guys. Should we not remember that this is a service that Dhabih has put up for us veteran and aspiring artists alike. We come here for crits so we can get better. Some of us want people like micke or Joachim or Dhabih to crit our work so they can point out the things we missed.
Not to kiss booty or anything but some of us actually look up to the other artists. Also some of us newbies have posted some amazing work too.(not necesarily me)
This forum is supposed to be about the art, not about our attitudes, but unfortunately some of us go out of our way to make things hard for others.
Just remember, no one here ever started drawing at the level they have now achieved. I bet everyone here started with stickmen family portraits. some of you did that when you were 4 and some are doing it now and trying to improve. Thats why they post things here. so that everybody can look at it and tell what they do and dont like about it.
So come on guys lets chill out a bit and get back to the real reason we are here!!
Awe
-I love this forum and personally I'd hate for something to happen, like dhabih shutting it down because things went all to crap.

Alias, you haven't been here longer than i have buddy, so dont go all veteran on me.
Stuff like this goes in cycles : everything's cool - total flamewar - everythng's cool - total flamewar - etc.
This is just another "hot" period. Big deal.

I think if it's so important for the veterans to *think* they have authority than let them have it. I think for everyone else like me, let's keep posting the art and looking at the art, veterans or newbies; we're all the same.

Spitfire, sorry if you've been here longer. Didn't mean it to be condescending at all. I think I've been here since October '99 or so. |

I am afraid even if Dhabih allows some people to moderate this place; most of the more mature and experienced here neither have the time nor are they keen on being the babysitters for some individuals lacking of self discipline.
Well and even if there're rules; they won't prevent people from breaking these - that's what I experienced in most forums I visited (I'd be happy if this forum proves me to be wrong )...
It makes me sad to see a place like this tumble down as it gave me new hope to reach my goal which I seemed to have lost in the past years.....
I never received feedback from those the most wish to get crits of - but those who responded to my questions helped me a lot; even helping others by commenting on their works helped me to develop my skill and selfconfidence which is more nessessary than getting props!
To all the people here weather they've been here for ages or just for a few hours: please stay and try to get this place open for all with all of it's spirit and possibilities!

Well, this seems to be useless attempt. Since the same topic keeps coming up and nothing happends. And also, I'm sorry if I put any words in your mouth now Dhabih. It's not my intention.
I think some of you need to dig up that thread by Dhabih, where he says that you should behave as if you were a guest coming into his house. This forum isn't your personal playground where you can piss everyone off just because you don't face them face to face.
In that same thread he also wrote that if you had any problem with someone, you should mail him (Dhabih) and tell him so. Instead of flaming and making the atomsphere bad on the forum. If he got enough mails he would take actions.
So if you all really thinks fausgfx, spitfire or whatever really spoils the forum. Send a mail to Dhabih and maybe (if you have a valid reason, I suppose) he'll listen to you and ban/warn the user(s). There's noone who benefits from all this flaming. And it's really childish to piss everyone off just because you feel that you need to provoke people. If you don't like something just don't give the person any attention. And the post will dissapear faster than you know it. To belive that everyone likes the same things as you is just naive, stupid and dictatoric (if that word exists ), the Natzi's comes to mind. And if this person keeps posting this *something* you don't like, DONT FLAME HIM, DAMMIT. Mail Dhab or get over it. I'm repeating myself here, but I really need to press this.
Since I've one of those who has been here since late 99 (don't let the posts or register date fool you. I visit here frequently, hours every day in periods. I just don't post that often). And I'm really missing the way this place used to be. And then I don't mean the _type_ of art people post, but the way people treat each other.
And I, for one, would be heartbroken if Micke or Joachim (or any other talanted member for that sake) left the forum. Since I don't know any of them personally(even if it feels like I do sometimes, yeah I know. I sound like a stalker now ), I would miss alot of great work that I wouldn't see if I just visited their homepages. It's also great to be able to comment on the pictures directly and have them respond to it. (and no, faustgfx, I'm not one of those so called asslickers. That's almost the only reason I don't post very often. If something has already been said or I don't have anything to add, I don't feel that I need to post another "wow, that's great")
Well, if this doesn't stop I will be one of those who leave (yeah, you don't care. So what, it wasn't a threat). Guess I should start bookmarking everyone's homepages and be naive and hope they'll post all their art there.
We'll I'm rambling away. Hopefully I made _someone_ think before they start flaming next time.
/Magnus (and yeah, don't mistake me for Zaph0d, similar nick but not the same person). |

99.991523474568571348% of the problem the board faces right now is the LACK of artwork by professional artists. I do not mean to flame newbies in any way, but the main reason why this board was so kickass is because of all the great artwork. I hope it's just a slump, becuase when the good artwork is posted, it inspires the "newbies" and they in turn eventually get better. I think this has made people pissed because they're just plain bored when they get here. If they can't look at artwork, why not bitch about something? And that is exactly what has happened. The newbie artists have been lulled into a flamewar because some people got bored and wanted to piss us all off with their degenerate verbal skills. Chapel hopefully may spark the life back into the heapless corpse we have on our hands right now. It's as simple as that, and that's the bottom line. Oh, and a few people taking some etiquette classes would help shape this board nicely. |

The reason it has gotten off topic is because of growth. I used to tell people about sijun if they didn't know, but I've stopped.
The best solution I can see is a karma system. People start with low karma. They get or lose karma from other users (the number of times users can vote for other users is restricted.) The voting is logged for all to see, so if someone is being an asshole and voting everyone else a shitload of bad karma, they can be voted below the karma threshold required to vote for others.
They can only post in some places with a certain amount of karma, like the digital art forum only if you have a certain amount of karma. Otherwise you are restricted to a low karma art forum, and random musings. Someone like Spooge, or FE, or whatever, would have a lot of karma. Someone like faustgfx, who pisses a lot of people off just because he is bored, would not, unless he shaped up. It is an excellent way to self moderate boards, and it works extremely well on slashdot.
The only downside is I don't think UBB supports it. Dhab is a busy guy, and I doubt he has the time to invest in another board.
A simpler but less effective solution: users as moderators. Dhab needs to take some trusty members and they need to work together to make sure things stay on track. Mods have the ability to delete threads, edit posts, or move threads to a more appropriate forum.

I think the board is fine now, last month was the worst. Every board will have to come through a bad stage sometime.

Man, I wish there was this many people giving crits and responding to the threads with ART.
To much time devoted to these typs of threads, and not enough to the Art people post.
I like to end on a happy note though

*Sigh* So it's coming to this, huh. I, too, am in the same situation as people like MilkMan and plant42. I've been following this forum since mid-summer reading all the posts, searching back through numerous previous posts researching guys like Mongoose, Threnody and pierre(sorry for mentioning you just after these guys man) or looking up tutorials by Fred and Spooge...in general, finding the history of this forum and I was no less than impressed by what was going on here. This was the place I needed to improve my work, this was the place I needed to help others with their work and learn how to give and receive constructive criticism. Now what has it become in these last short months...a mudslinging fest.
Something needs to be done and it needs to be done quick. Chapel's thread is a good start, I suggest everybody go over there and take a look at it and participate. I think what's hurting this forum is the fact that we don't really have a moderator. I know it's Dhabih right now but he doesn't have time to wade through these threads and moderate. We're going to have to moderate ourselves for awhile and I think it best that those that have been around this forum, those that are new to the forum and more importantly those that want this to continue to be the forum shut up and put up and let's do something about this.
Bottom line is that I don't want to see this forum fall apart and devolve into forums like those I've visited in the past. This forum was once great but the pieces are still here which means it can be great again...it'll just take some work.
So who's up to it?

P.S. why don't you post your stuff, faust? It's not bad stuff and your self-portrait was very impressive...one of the more memorable pieces that stick in my mind from this entire forum...don't know exactly why, it just does. The only thing I have to say is that you're not exactly helping yourself out by refusing to post work. And you can tell us to ignore you but to me that's like telling me to ignore the sun...I can't turn it off. I can maybe stay indoors and avoid the sun but what good does that do me to be deprived of the good things to do outside just because I don't like the sun itself? The only way I have to ignore you is to stop coming to the forum completely (since I can't avoid threads started by you, since, well, you don't start any threads unfortunately). Not coming to this forum is not an option but it would be nice to come and see posts and criticism as well as the occasional random comments you make. Just my thoughts. (hmmm, long p.s., huh )

Simple solution to this is just have a moderator. I know how dhabih feels about having this forum moderated, but at the size that it has grown to it is necessary. I can understand back then the size was not as huge as now, so maybe we do need a moderator?
P.S Dhabih, I'm sure there are more than enough people who are dedicated enough that would be interested in moderating this board. |
