My computer has a 60 GB hard drive, or at least it did when I bought it!

I went to check out some stuff in my system today and my computer tells me that I only have 38.1 GB total hard drive space. Now, that's not the amount of free or used disk space, it's telling me that my TOTAL hard drive space is 38.1 GB!

WHERE DID THE REST OF MY HARD DRIVE SPACE GO?!

My system says that 21.2 GB's of space is being used and that 16.8 GB of space is free. So, what I want to know is were the other 21.9 GB's of hard drive space went.

Does anyone have any advice or suggestions on this matter?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Malachi

did this hard drive come with your computer or did you put it in yourself. I know of some systems and motherboards which will only support up to a specific size hard drive. In order for it to support a larger drive you'll have to get some drivers either from the hard drive manufacturers website, or you may need to update your motherboards BIOS

did it change to that size just recently? maybe your partition was split to begin with?

i also know that sometimes computers give wrong informations about the drive spaces. do a disk cleanup...or something.

Give PARTITION MAGIC et al a try and split up your HD (makes it possible to change the partitions without formating the disc), check out if it's really set to FAT16/32 and don't forget to kill the guy who sold you that comp.

What I would do:

- check in the bios if you really have a 60GB HD. If not then check your bill if you really bought a 60GB HD. If yes get in contact with your vendor (like Flat said ).
- if the bios says its a 60GB HD then perhaps you have a second partition of 20GB. check if there is another drive than C: and your CDRom/DVDRom (D: most likely). If so then thats it (might be that this partition is not even formated).
- If you dont see a second partition you can look in your settings somewhere if there is a second partition or not. Unfortunately the place where to look for that might depend on what operating system you are using. In win2k its: settings/control panels/Administrative Tools/Computer Management. That tool has a section Storage and in it an entry Disk Management. Click on it and you will see the partitions on your drives.

System specs for my computer.

It turns out that my computer only has a 40 GB hard drive after all.

I'M AN ENORMOUS MORON.

I'm very sorry for wasting your time.

And trust me, it will never happen the other way around... (like finding out that your HD is bigger than you thought)
