Just noticed in the brushes palette in Photoshop 7, there is a little checkbox called "smoothing" which seems to fix the nasty strokes that you get when drawing lines with a tablet, hurrah!!!!

i haven't had any problems with that using a wacom in previous versions of photoshop, and i'm not having probs with it in ps7 w/ or w/out smoothing... maybe this is the case for others as well, since there aren't replies here? anyhow, good that it's finally working for you. |

It's a well known problem, only happens if you draw a curve relatively fast with the tablet. If you don't believe it, set a small hard brush, turn smoothing off and try it |

its not a problem, its because the computer is not fast enough to render the input you generated from your tablet.
The Smoothing feature is just a simple software trick that average out your input. |

Ah yes Mr Bang, I'm on a 3 year old PII 450, so maybe that could be it?
Next month I'm getting a dual athlon PC, so we will see whether that improves things for me
I always thought that it was the USB port causing the lag. And while it is obviously just a smoothing algorythm, Painter and Illustrator have had it for years so I personally am quite pleased that Photoshop now has it too.

Actually, it has nothing to do with the computer being slow, its the tablet. The older Intuos and Graphires only send data at 50 Hz, the newer ones do 60. I run my mouse at over 100 Hz.
If you draw a curve in half a second at 50 Hz, the computer only receives 25 sets of coordinates from the Wacom, so unless your paint program can do smoothing (Painter and Photopaint have done it for a long time), you get a faceted line. |

Interesting, but I don't believe I've ever had this problem (unless my hand just slipped up). |

Those jagged PS lines have always plucked my nose, nice to see that they've included interpolation in PS7. I've always thought it was the USB port lagging behind (it couldn't be the cpu for sure), but it's actually Graphire related, read it all here:
Dan's Data's terrific in-depth review of the Graphire
To sum it up, the usb port has a sampling rate of 125 Hz, but the tablet can only produce 50 Hz. Does anybody here know if the bigger edition Intuos style tablets are quicker?
Thanks, |

You can unclip the pen holder from the top of the tablet, which is handy if you're using the tablet in an odd orientation. |
OMG! i did not know this! thnx for the link Tor |

hmmmm... using my Wacom 9 x 12 with just installed PShop 7, here's what I get withthe smooth off and on for a quick move:
Looks like the smoothing is just taking the edge of the corners... |

For the note, my tablet is a Intuos. I guess it wouldn't surprise me. The Graphire has usually been known as a less powerful but cheaper solution to the Intuos. |
