Was showing a friend of mine the speed painting III thread and she was blown away by the skill and talent of the members here. Being mainly exposed to the style of http://www.deskmod.com and used to the tools and techniques used there, this is a new experience for her.
She was asking me what tools and programs you guys used. I answered the same that she was used to, Photoshop, Illustrator, PSP, and a few others, but I honestly wasn't completely sure.
So what tools do you all use? Tablet and some software package? Paper and a Scanner? What is your opinion of the various software packages you have used? And aside from practice, any advice for a n00b?
(And found this, looking for anything more anyone wants to add: http://www.sijun.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=2&t=006636
And which faq does he speak of? I seem to be overlooking it)

I use Corel Photopaint and an old 12x12 Wacom UDII tablet. Photopaint is a nice middleground between Painter and Photoshop.

I'd say most people here use photoshop and a wacom tablet of some kind. There are a few people using mouses as well though, and quite a few using painter along with photoshop (or only painter). I myself use OpenCanvas or Photoshop with a Wacom Intuos 2 6x8. |

I use a green animators pencil, then I scan, then I use Photoshop 6 with a mouse.
I don't know how these guys get that nice sketchy or painted look with photoshop though. I only know how to use the airbrush the smudger and the eraser. |

I cut costs where possible because I'm on a budget so I use:
- El cheapo scanner. $99.95 Aussie dollars on sale.
- El cheapo photoshop 4. $125 AUD on sale when 5 came out.
- El cheapo Wacom Graphire tablet.
- El cheapo budget range PC from a hardware chain.
- Misc - Reflex photocopy paper, blue penciling leads, loads of sketch books (somewhere in the vaccinity of 30+ in the last 2 years), 2B pencilling leads, very little inks if any, pantone pens, and if I'm doing a fully shaded piece I'll use pencils ranging from 2B -> 6B and cotton tip ear cleaners for smudging. Lastly a spray vanish to protect and preserve my pencils after I'm done. |
