Viewing these images brings me to another point.
--- She will be up against an ever-increasing range of cyborg and robot assassins. What you think they should be like?
How about Drawing A Cyber-girl up against a Cyborg assasin? Or your ideas on what the assasins would look like?
I'm going to try this weekend to sketch something up.
I'm also going to try and do several more attempts at the city scapes. Apart from the domes, I am having trouble thinking what the architecture of the buildings will be like. (Both inside and out)
Any sketches, scribbles, comments would be greatfully recieved. I think this is been really good fun so far. All the Drawings have been fantastic. You people Rock!!
Have a good weekend everyone :> )

jr ---Thats awesome and damn quick too! scary legs though!!
Fredrik Svensson ---Welcome to my world. You know I feel like I'm researching a lost city and you have actually been there. That is some awesome commentary. Some great details and thoughts. Your reference material is impressive. I for one am never further then 10 feet from Appleseed and Ghost in the shell and Akira. Otomo and Shirow are masters in my mind.
I find it interesting that you think the richer ones live further down. This would mean they would be less exposed to the radiation from the suns rays So that would make sence. Wow really cool.
I'm going to do some brain-storming and sketching this Afternoon. Thanks.
Maceface - Go for it, I am looking forward to seeing what you do.
All you guys have some serious talent.

My ideas on the subject:
Is the city built on the sea bottom surface? In that case, I think the deepest parts of town should be the richest parts of town. When the city was first built, it was similiar to a space station, domed on the surface. But as population grew, the city expanded downwards into the earth. As expansion progressed, it is only natural that building techniques are refined and redefined, therefore the newest parts ( = deepest parts) are safer, spacier, more luxurious. Thats where the beautiful people will want to live Old Town would have a utilitarian, industrial look, lots of cramped spaces and WW2 submarine style detailing everywhere.. living quarters are small, packed close together and stacked on top of each other. Deep Town would consist of luxury appartments, recreational facilities and lots of holographic illusions to take away the feel of an unescapeable box on the bottom of the sea, thereby reducing the annual rate of suicides. Access from Old Town to Deep Town is highly restricted.
Industry hasnt expanded along the same route as living quarters, instead growing out into various Outposts in the surrounding area. This is where the cyborgs and robots come in, most labor work is carried out by amphibian (transforming?) robots that travel to and from the Outposts. Most human labor workers have been modified by their employers in an effort to maximize productivity.
Perhaps subs dont enter and leave the city as in breaching the outer hull, instead docking and connecting like spaceships in any number of scifi flicks..
Unless you have a very alien outside threat to the City (giant mutant fishmen or something), I dont really see war as a means of solving conflicts in this world. therefore, the police and army would be combined into a single peacekeeping entity, whose primary enemies are crime cartels, terrorism and the occasional berserk robot.
Sources for inspiration:
Appleseed by Masamune Shirow (manga)
Trinity by White Wolf (roleplaying game)
The Abyss by James Cameron (movie)
Blue Submarine No. 6 (anime)
Hope I've sparked some ideas |

well after cleaning my apt i felt rather bored...so i gave the assassin a shot. and for the 2 and a half hours i put in i rather like this pic. I chose to put some horse or dog type legs in...for faster running and better agility...uhm longer arms...cybernetic of course. and the skull mask because well it would be scarier to have this cybernetic assassin lurking around you looking like death! well i hope you like it! btw i LOVE concept work...i love this thread...i might have more to contribute!
looks like my storage place is screwing up...ill try and fix it soon.

What do you guys think of
Sanctuary City? (for a name for the city?)
Got any other suggestions for a name, thoughts, opinions?
Any ideas on what the government buildings would look like? Any architecturally minded people around? |

hmm well from my viewpoint i would *try* to incorperate the word "sub" in there somewhere...well because its below the surface. so something like "subsanctuary 11" its just an idea..i put the # 11 on cuz it would make it seem like there are other "colonies" out there. |

Maceface, that cyborg looks damn wicked! With all that armour plating and the grafted-on animal legs, I think this is your best cyborg pick yet.
I've got another pic on the way but it's a long way off. Only got this sketch of an underwater machinegun that fires drill bits instead of bullets, supposedly so they travel through the water faster. It uses compressed air to launch them.

Aw yeah! Weren't those some filth railguns? Railguns could be nice underwater, but the shear amount of power usage they'd require would make them very unreliable underwater. |

For the love of God maceface. Your puttin all the other works to shame(Definitely not a put down of any of the other pics posted). I felt all left out when i viewed this topic at my colleges library. So i whipped this up right quick in English. Looks like shit but its not done(pretty obvious). The idea is these robot asassins are regular robots infected with a virus, hence the psychotic smile and skull over the CPU. Guns just didnt seem like fun so i figured crossbow would add a twist. The bolts have a needle that releases a bot-fatal electrical signal apon penetration. Are all the citizens robots Shiro?

justafledgling - thats really cool man. I like the crossbow idea. I love the cut away on the needle.
Humans live in the city. Some have enhanced themselves cybernetically. There are some robots in the city as well. Mainly government worker bots maintanence bots as well as good ol' assasin bots.
I will post some new stuff shortly, I have just been flat out with other stuff. Love all your work guys.

Phew, it's done!
I've got this posted in the Finished Galleries, too. This is a concept painting I've done to demonstrate how infantry could operate underwater. Gigantic U-boats and fighter-subs might form the majority of the governments armed forces, but that only makes guerilla tactics more ideal for the eco-terrorists. Torpedo infantry ambushs would be one of those tactics. These can ambush government convoys as they pass through mountainous regions beneath the ocean.
I guess the image explains itself in most ways - the troop on the left has a drill-bit carbine and the right has the torpedo launcher. They both have shoulder props travel through the water and weight belts to help them stand on the ocean floor and use reefs as cover.
The other idea I have for aquatic weaponry is a long-range anti-infantry Sonic Cannon, since sound travels 10 times further in water than in the air. Worth doing? |

Shiro: Nice work so far. Its nice to see someone give a story line like an underwater civilization such depth. (lousy pun intended :P ). You have mentioned submarines several times in your posts so I thought I would direct you to two links about possible advanced sub design in the future. You may already be familiar with the concept of supercaptiving vessels but if not then please look here --> http://www.sciam.com/2001/0501issue/0501ashleybox3.html
They really seem to lend themselves to interesting scifi designes and I imagine that the shimmer the "bubble" creates must make for a REALLY striking image if rendered correctly. As I was looking this up for you I also came across a wonderful site that has already taken this to the next level. Check out ---> http://www.deepangel.com/
For some wonderful artwork on the subject. Hope this might be of some use. Keep up the good work! |

And should we start another 1 by chance? I didnt do much for this post but its a great idea. Wonder how many people would create images for it? |

Tiger Eaten - Hi there, thanks for your post and for locating those awesome websites. That deepAngel is looking fantastic and the supercaptivating weapon is intreging.
Justa flegling - I have been writing the story that goes with this on and off for about 2 years now. I am creating this world in which the story belongs as a focal vessel for creativity and fun. I would like to make a comic maybe or something like that one day but the story is strictly a hobby in my spare time. Its good fun don't you think?

this is a work in progress but I thought I would post it now as I am impatient, lol.
A Dome Security Patrol stumbles onto terrorists using a Class 9 drilling Crab to breach the dome cover over the Government sector. If the terrorists had succeeded, thousands of people would have been killed and Santurary City would have been plunged into caos.
Film at eleven!

Thanks for the praise, Shiro_tengu and Justa Fledgling.
Justa, we never see enough cross-bows in stuff these days, do we? If anyone says that a crossbow would be useless in modern combat, I'd invite them to a game of Multiplayer Half-life. It's the deadliest sniper weapon in that game.
Shiro, that is definitely your best pic to date! That caustic effect of the water on the dome looks amazing, however you did it. The police sub looks groovy and that drilling crab has a very sleek and menacing design to it. All the population inside must be SCREAMING! No wonder they want to be back on the surface.
Tiger Eaten - checked out those articles on supercaptivation. That's amazing! In fact it's down-right scary! Vessels travelling underwater at speeds greater than the speed of sound, while the visibility underwater is barely a hundred meters?
Deepangel sounds like an exciting series, too. I think they'd be better off designing the craft with something more original than the robotech style fighter look, though.
Did this pic at lunch-time, my first speed-painting of 1 hour and 5 minutes, beginning from a blank canvas and an idea in my head. It's a government hunter-seeker droid, designed for recon as well as seeking out solitary infantry targets. It has a sonic cannon in it's left arm and a harpoon launcher in the right.
It has a eel-shaped design to help it travel quickly through the water and made quick turns.

Allright... I have done a bit of thinkin Shiro, and I have realized that this idea of a dome, somehow does not seem relistic to me! I know this might be completely opposite of your original concept and you may not be able to use this to a hell of alot, but It somehow doesn't seem plausible to me, that man, when being forced off the face of the earth would settle on the very bottom of the ocean with a cap over his head... i mean it is not in our nature to settle in open space, without any kind of shelter. The first people on this planet didn't exactly seetle in the middle of a huge plane, with a blanket of bearskin over them... no they withdrew into caves, having only the entrance to guard, or perhaps two of them, so they could escape trough the other if they were forced back from the first one. My scripple here is not the great art, that otherwise are presentet in this thread, but a simple section, done in a rush, simply to show you what I mean.
I believe man would again withdraw into caves, manmade or not, but this would solve alot of the problems, the situation of living on the bottom of the ocean would present! Even thinking of the radiation they are trying to escape, the shelter of the rocks, would do almost as much as caves did for the first people, conserning the sun. I dont believe I need to explain all of this all to thorougly! I will let this just be an example of a different way of approaching this situation.
