pretty good special |
now I know you are dissing this movie cause of bad judgement. There was no movie out at the time that had as good special effects as the Matrix. Can't think of any movie that was using or used the 360 param digi style motion as the Matrix produced.
The martial arts in it were very decent, for only few weeks of practicing it. I only compare martial arts with a couple movies (one being drunken master). |

Sure, I saw them on hit television shows and commercials before the film was even released. |

Let's read the posts
I first said movies. Next I didn't say no one ever used it, just not as well as the brothers in a motion picture. |

I too think the Matrix only looked nice. I was pleasantly surprised with it since I was mostly expecting another horrible Keanu Reeves in a sci-fi movie type thing. I was very disapointed with some of the fight scenes only because I've seen so many good fight scenes done in similar fashion in Hong Kong action films that predate the Matrix. But the special effects were done well.
If I had to put it next to the almighty Blade Runner, well, then everything is put into perspective.
Blade Runner at its heart, is a simple story pregnant with larger meaning, told perfectly through the camera's lens. Although I'm annoyed the DVD only contains the director's cut and not both, the director's cut is my favorite since it doesn't spoon feed anything to me. This movie will never get old to me.
The beauty of the Matrix to me is only skin deep. It was a fun movie with some cool moments, but it will not last with me. I may watch it once or twice more in the forseable future. Can't wait for the next fun movie with cool moments. There's usually at least one a year. |

The Mummy Returns could be considered a fun movie with cool moments... but parts of it are so stupid, lame, or laughable that the overall movie sucked. Next to it, Matrix looks like Citizen Kane. |

Not all fun movies with cool moments are created equal...obviously.
I saw the Mummy Returns. And yes, The Matrix is so much better then it (not that anyone couldn't have predicted that anyway.)

i think you guys are too seriously analyzing a movie. they are just supposed to be entertaining. i for one, think the matrix was. although it does suck as you see it more often. and keanu reeves is a crappy actor. i do think the sequels might actually be pretty cool though. it sounds like they are training a lot for the martial arts portion, and they got a guy from crouching tiger, hidden dragon. if anything, it should be entertaining. |

Yes, but your trying to make a point about the movie having some of the best special effects of that time. I implied that it had been done before, movie or television reguardless. The only thing that made it different or what you think as "better" is the flying bullets. But I suppose we are all inclined to our own opinions. Have a nice day. |

i believe that given more time, the movie would have made more sense. if this had been a book, the author could have gone into detail with cypher's fight if he should betray his companions or not, and its climactic end. it would probably have made sense to you if there had been a hundred pages describing his inner fight and maybe showing him being teared between his love for trinity and his loyalty to the others on one side, and the comfort and ease of a life in the matrix on the other. what if he was still thinking of not helping the agents when he was eating the steak? but that doesn't fit into a 100 minute movie, so it's left out. same goes for many of the other inconsistencies (not all of course).
anyway, i liked the movie quite a lot, not like blade runner, which i found extremely boring
there's a great adventure game (anyone remember those? ) based on blade runner. get it if you can, it's like 3 years old and it rocks.

What I dislike at this movie, is that they have too much copied things, from Ghost in the shell ( Iam sure they have and will copy things from DragonballZ in Matrix2 in the fightingscenes)
And too much John Woo, with a touch Tarantino ( these black clothes with sunglasses arent really new, hehe since Blues Bros.)
Oh , and it was NOT stupid, u need only a little bit Fantasy
But the story was nice and well done, the artwork was too, and the colours , that green style like Seven , was very well used...it fits to that atmosphere.
It was a very good movie, but only because it was a good cocktail with good ingredients...there was not much new stuff-these effects have benn used bevor in advertising and Musicvids...
And that violent scene, where they run Amok and killed everyone at the lift was fantastic!
Ah what I forgot-it was fantastic to see ,what can developed out these storyboards and artworks they made bevor. They are exactly like the movie!
Imagine , what your own Movie would look like, because it is possible to make it "real"...!

It's exactly that "movies are just supposed to be entertaining" atittude that ruins so many mainstream films.sure, they can be entertaining, but generally, the really good movies have an underlying message somewhere amidst the plot and stortytelling. Pure entertainmentism produces mindless crap. |

Another question is, which anime was it the directors saw and wanted to make a movie of? (as they said they did) It could've been ghost in the shell, but if anyone's seen Serial Experiments Lain, there are some BIG similarities there, too. |

Yeh, it stole heaps of stuff from anime and heaps of different sci-fi/cyberpunk novels.
I forget where but I found a page that listed three pages of the similarities between the matrix and Ghost in the shell. Some of it was bs but there were a lot of things that were valid.
But that doesnt mean its bad. Its bringing these things into the mainstream. The cool fight scenes, all the computer hacker stuff. The alternative reality. Theyve been in countless books and anime movies, but most ppl have never seen it. |

I personally thought the movie was pretty good. though, I can't remember though, was it made by Mirimax (sorry, spelled it wrong.)I think it was, but anyways. I'm not a big fan of Mirimax, I think they rather suck at making movies, but are really good at making boring movies. But the Matrix was a exception. I personally thought it was fairly good. The story made sense, but in a way not. The graphics are very good though, and some of the scenes are also very good. |

here's my opinion on The Matrix. The overall story structure I think, is damn goofy, and definitely has the feel of a beginner or not very serious writer making something that is supposed to be Hollywood. The pacing and setup is bad too so that there are actually some boring parts of the movie and it doesn't really get good till the end. and the special effects... what is with all the damn ripples? aren't we all aware that that is one of the easiest things to generate on a computer? nothing about the special effects remotely blew me away, but they were fun.
now here's the wierd flipside... despite all the obvious that I mentioned above... the movie still has a casualness, a simplicity that you can kind of accept, and in the end not come out annoyed by it, and most people even liking it. to use a small example of the whole... the sunglasses/trench coats. what a goddamn laughable cliche, right? but somehow you can kind of just accept it, and eventually enjoy it. (or if you don't have a brain, just enjoy it right off the bat.
I'm a critic, and always pushing for higher standards... but I'm also well aware of the realities of a production and the business world, and how concessions are necessary... so I got no beef with this flick. It was an ok way to pass the time. |
