I finally got disgusted with "imagining" a face and painting it (with Painter), and decided to get more experience with actual faces. This fella was nice enough to sit for me . I'm going for the rough, painterly look, with relatively saturated colors. Please let me know how to do this better. Thanks.

Here's a touch-up thanks to Cicinimo. Very nice crit, thank you!

I like your colors, however I think that he forehead would look better with the hair overlapping onto it, rather than visa-versa. Also, the black outline around the left eye seems destracting to me. The bridge of the nose also appears a little quirky. Still, I like it. Nice.

Very nice, but maybe a littlebit flat? More contrasts might help, or sculpting the head a little more with a more defined lightsource... i don't know, just a thought

I agree it's flat and I was hoping for just this kind of critique. I'm very new to anything more than lines and a bit of comic book shading, but desperately want to get better (hence posting this in hopes of finding out what's wrong). I'm also working on spooge's heads, but lack the time I'd like. Thanks 'fish!
