First thing you should concentrate on is composition.. like separating the background from the foreground. Also, where is that light in the middle coming from.. the one coming through the hallway dealy? Other than that, great colors and a good idea.. I also like that coloring style.. kind of metallic and scratchy. |

I would like the piece best if you removed the figure and cut off everything below the sidewalk. Then it would be more of a metaphysical almost abstract work. In that regard, I think the composition is fine, as well as the colors, texture and lighting. I love the staircase, it's so enigmatic - is it going up or down? No need to answer that.
It may not be what you were going for, but just be aware that you've done some good things here in abstract composition and visual interest.

thanks for the comments!
Nova, would you have any tips on seperating the foreground from the background? I am not quite sure what you mean.
I agree I definitely need to work heavily on composition and perspective.. I haven't had any formal teaching, so I've just drawn stuff without thinking about it. |

eheh sorry about that. I was going to mention some things but my brain went somewhere else. A few good ways to separate the foreground from the background is by making the background darker, making the foreground a warmer color and the background cooler (or something like that), and using bigger shapes in the foregound than in the background. I'm trying to remember some advice given to me a few weeks ago, so what I'm saying might be the other way
About the formal teaching stuff.. I barely was taught anything in a class setting (in my last real art class in 9th grade) and try to learn things by reading books, looking at art and talking to pros. I'm seriously hoping for some more of that formal training next year in college..
