Hi,
After I came across this forum last week I decided to try out some painting.
Although I planned to use photoshop I decided to just get some acrylics due to a bad headache that has been bothering me the past few days.
I have done some occasional painting in highschool about six or seven years ago.
I had never used acrylics before, just oils.
I just wanted to try out the color mixing and stuff so I chose something simple to begin with. I didn't actually expect to finish it.
So please don't kill me..I'm only a beginner at this. But some tips would be nice.

It is a fun painting to look at, I like the flow you have going with your brush strokes and your colour scheme is pretty pleasing to the eye. I'll be going through the same troubles you did soon, I'm only familiar with oils and digital and I have to get started on an acrylic of my own due next week for colour theory class. Sorry no tips since I'm new too, just a thumbs up. |

I started out using oils and trying acrylics, it was really difficult. It looks like your trying to use some of the techniques u would use while painting with oils. Like the leaves in the tree that kinda stabbing the canvas with paint. The good/bad thing about acrylic is that it dries fast, so u can work with layers. Or u can go for that paint by number look placing different colors next to eachother.
I like what u have going so far, it looks like u spread the paint very fast, how it blends in to eachother. theres a few acyrlic mediums out there to slow the drying process, to make it easier to blen
The tree trunk is very nice, looks like theres layers on there. I'd just suggest putting some more highlights on the tree leaves.. not as invidual as u have them there, but when a tree is in the sun the top and outer branches have light on them and they create shadows on the lower ones.
sorry I'm sure u know all that, you said it was just practice, but just incase. |

Since I started using computers painting was just too frustrating. I am used to being able to layer stuff and being able to try different things and just undo them.
Acrylics comes a lot closer to that feel. So now I kind of regret that I was so hung up with oils.
The only thing I don't like is the colors. They all seem to be much lighter or something then what I was used to with oils. It's pretty hard to get black. Unless you use black of course. But then it gets murky really fast.
Anyways..thanks for the critiques.
