Hello everybody,
How can I make this better?
I started this out in color, but quickly got frustrated and desaturated it because I'm more familiar with black and white renderings. Any thoughts?
No photo ref for this one, just a gesture sketch from a life drawing class earlier tonight.

Oblagon, it has been awhile sine I have known any of those guys. You might try Francis, he's as close as you will find among net geeks like us. Maybe i could be of help?
optic illusion, just needs a fuller value range, go to blacks, and then it just needs more information in the shapes, ie drawing.

Did this quick splash screen a while back for an ill-fated game project:
Its probably about a 30-minute piece, not counting the logo, which I had created previously. |

I did this during my Thursday lunch break with the wacom.
And this on my Friday Break in 3d Studio Max4 to add to the underwater city thread
Craig - I love your digital artwork (and those awesome paintings for the Final Fantasy movie)(and all the stuff on your website). You are a remarkable artist.
Jezebel - I love the dragon, the moon and as usual - all your artwork.

Oblagon, mail away.
Anthony, the drawing needs more consideration. A fast simplified stroke can only work if is in the right place.
Look at water, how the shapes compress vertically as they get near the horizon.
Decide where the light is coming from stick to it. The light is kinda semi there, meaning the light and shadow patterns do not have enough dfferentiation (contrast ) from one another.
shiro tengu-thanks!
This is where the evil giant manufactures his favorite meat pies

Anthony, more like this?
It is quite graphic, but you can see how little "rendering" you need if you just get things in the right places. That is what you shoud be thinking about. You have 30 minutes to decide how to get the most out of 4-5 big shapes.
This is loosely based on a Dean Cornwell drawing.

Thanks thanks good sir! Backbone of England. Stout chap. I'm happy now that I "know" what I'm supposed to be doing when I'm painting-just have to convince myself to do it. Thanks again, just what I needed to refocus! I'm gonna see about doing another pic in a similar vein later tonight.

OK, "Small Boats" was the topic this time. I tried to get the drawing down better, get the lighting a little more consistent, get shadows in the right places. Some parts I like how they came out - other parts I just didn't know how to go about drawing them, gotta study more I guess(like the water in general, I don't know how it behaives under varying circumstances). As always, crits welcome, can't stop now :]

did this in the office (nope. my proffesion has nothing to do with arts whatsoever)
about 15 mnts
with mouse
in a crappy program called photodeluxe something .
as speed as you wanna be
anybody care to explain what's exactly the purpose of this speed painting?
i mean is it just some kind of preliminary painting (e.g. early concept, composition, big values, etc) or is it meant to make finished painting (which is done as fast as you can)?
i see some paintings still very loose while some are too incredible to be called preliminary.
many thanks in advance. |

Here's one I did a while ago that I was rather proud of. I didn't quite do it the way it was meant to be done I think... but I like it. From the head drawing thread...
