Okay Christmas is long gone, but I started this before then and I had to finish him before I moved on to something else. I hesitated to call it quits on him cause he's still looks quite flat and I wanted to add more detail to the background, but I just seem to be overworking it now. So, I got him to a resonable state and am finishe with this particular drawing for now.

Critiques and comments are much appreciated, particularly on how I can ad more form to my work. I try to use warm and cool colors to add depth and some contour to help, but it just doesn't seem to be coming off.

Thanks.

JN

P.S.
Here is a larger version of the same.

terrific stuff....a great idea and great execution. I love the way the guy looks...maybe, to nitpick, you should change the colour of the staff he's holding because it's too close to his skin colour but it doesn't really matter. in the background, put a bit more detail or some kind of stuff, either on the sand or in the sky because this way it looks like you just split two colours behind him. but still, what an awesome picture. fantastic

heh hot santa
not bad, but i think the lightning on Rasta Claus is too dark for his environment. particulary on his legs, that sand would create alot of bounce light to hit the legs.

You have also created some unnecessary problems for yourself: His beard is almost the same color/ material as the fur on his jacket...And the same goes for the wood pole in his right arm: you've made the wood in the same color as the skin! also you could change the angle of the pole.. making it less parallel to his right arm.

Thanks a lot madmouth and geelimp.

I struggled to keep his skin dark and get the fealing he's still out in the sun. I failed, but I will probably come back to this painting again and see if I can get it right. The position of the cane is just laziness on my part. I had finished his right arm and couldn't get the cane to fit in his hand anyother way. The beard I tried to layer warm shades to bring it forward and use only cools for the trim, but I just don't think I went dark enough to distinguish the two.

All in all I just had to move on from this picture, but I promise I do appreciate your comments and will incorporate them in to a better result for Rasta Claus.
