Hey..
Once upon a time there was a woman, and she thought: "hey, i'll write a book!" Well, she wrote a book and it was amazing everybody wanted to read it.
The book was about a boy who goes to a wizzard-school. The boy was named harry potter. And the rest of the story is very cool, but i won't explain it all to ya, because then i need a lot of space.
Well, those stories was filmed, and here in Holland everybody wants to see that movie. No matter what age.
Once upon a time i was scrolling through this board and i thought: "hey, i want to know if there are also people on this board who also heard of harry potter..."
And if you heard of him would you also tell me were you come from and how famous harry potter is in your country?

It's pretty much huge everywhere. Last weekend (and also its opening weekend), the second movie grossed 88 million dollars. _________________ QED, sort of. |

I saw the last of Bond yesterday. Better than the two last ones.
About Potter... yeah, it's a big thing here also. The second film isn't out yet, so I'd be seeing it when it arrives. _________________ "Ever forward, my darling wind." -Master Yuppa

Harry Potter has been huge just about everywhere for the past three or so years...he's getting smaller, but he's still huge.
I've got all four books thus far in hardcover and am waiting for the next. I've seen (and have) the first HP movie, and am now waiting for a certain person to watch it so's we can go see the second. Unfortunately, that certain person has neither a TV or a VCR that actually works. _________________ ~Gio

One has no idea how big Harry Potter is unless they spend time with young children. I worked at an enrichment camp teaching art, and everywhere I turned there was *something* relating to it! Its amazing how seriously the kids take it too. _________________ Under communism, man exploits man. Under capitalism, it's just the opposite.

In 1984, American author Nancy Stouffer (website :http://www.realmuggles.com/) released a shitty book called The Legend of Rah and the Muggles, in which some characters, names and descriptions are nearly identical to those appearing in Rowling's Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone and its three sequels.
Rowling's Names-------Stouffer's Names
Harry Potter-----------Larry Potter
Muggles---------------Muggles
Lily Potter-------------Lilly Potter
Neville-----------------Nevils
Nimbus 2000-----------Nimbus
Keeper of the Keys-----Keeper of the Gardens
The main character in Stouffer's book is Larry Potter. He wears oversized glasses and has wavy black hair, just like Harry Potter. And many of the characters in Stouffer's and Rowling's books share the same names.
Stouffer says Rowling must have known about The Legend of the Rah and the Muggles before her first Potter book was published in 1997. Rowling's Harry Potter books have sold more than 75 million copies worldwide.
Rowling says she never knew such a book existed. Stouffer's book has been out of print, and Rowling says she never had access to it.
Read more about it here ... :
http://abcnews.go.com/sections/GMA/GoodMorningAmerica/GMA010320_Potter_Suit.html
JK Rowling won the case because Stouffer stupidly tried to falsify and fabricate evidence, she got what she deserved I suppose, but this whole case still reeks.
http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/features/20020918-1408-potterlawsuit.html
Another striking similarity ...
"Tim Hunter Created by writer Neil Gaiman and artist John Bolton in 1990's The Books of Magic prestige-format limited series, Tim Hunter was a bespectacled kid with a troubled home life who's approached by a group of magic-users who inform him of his potential to be the most powerful magician in the universe. Sound familiar? Hell, Tim even had a pet owl from the start too."
From link : http://www.thefourthrail.com/features/1101/thoughtballoons10.shtml
Peculiar "similarities" from The Lord of the Rings ...
in this link ... http://www.mugglenet.com/hpvslotr.shtml
Peculiar "similarities" from Star Wars ...
in this link ... http://www.mugglenet.com/lukevsharry.shtml
" Similarities can also be seen between J.K. Rowling's novels and the Narnia (by CS Lewis) series: in both books station platforms are used to transfer into the magical world, and wise centaurs befriend and help the young heroes."
http://www.hausarbeiten.de/rd/faecher/hausarbeit/anl/19469.html
Pretty pathetic I think ... Now JK Rowling allegedly suffers from writers block ... teheheh ... I wonder why ??? Busy reading books for some more "inspiration" ... ???
Now JK Rowling is fighting a russian rip-off author who is writing about a magician girl called Tanya Grotter. Link :http://www.heraldsun.news.com.au/printpage/0,5481,5446848,00.html

Yeah i've read about this athor fights. everybody wants to wright a book like rowling too, so they sue her. They are just *jealous (*how do you write that?)
I think if you do that you can forget your job as a writer, becaus you just have no inspiration for a good story, you don't have to steel your story, if you are a good writer.
I didn't know that harry potter was that famous as he is, the whole world know him!

Pointless Fact #623423212:
The Cafe "Nicolson's", where J.K. Rowling wrote out most of the Harry Potter stuff is right across the street from where I work. |

Not that the whole situation doesn't have an odious stench about it, but Neil Gaiman has gone on record as saying Harry Potter isn't a swipe of Books of Magic. If the creator gives it a clean bill it's hard to argue otherwise.
Personally, I was struck by some close similarities to Ursula LeGuin's Wizard of Earthsea.

Oh come on. The naming thing I can see as fucked...BUT really, it's a fucking magic story....they're ALL the same...
Every magic book has a wizard, a witch, magic wands, pointy hats, cloaks, and such. Nearly every fantasy book has elfs, ogres, ghosts, demons, golems, mimics, muggles, dragons, werewolfs, and such. Nearly every popular story has the dorky kid, the opressor, the guide, the brain, the guy that dies, the idiodic comic releif and "the secret". Did I forget the unbeatable odds, mystic chantings, and places you shouldn't go otherwise you might die(or get eaten if you're a hobbit)?
that's why books suck. Write your own book...and NO DRAGONS. Stop doing that! Leave it the fuck alone. It's fantasy, it's fiction, as in things that don't exist...they're not real...but with how much people reuse them...it's as though they're real...since they exist in countless masses of other bad books.
every time a new book comes out:
"This book is so awesome! It's groundbreaking! It's original! It's amazing!"
"does it have dragons?"
"...yes."

I personally believe in fairys, dragons, and unicorns...but technically they're under the fictional section because they're fake...even though I believe in them.
But then, I'm a pretty princess. |

`What sort of people live about here?' asked Alice.
`In that direction,' the Cat said, waving its right paw round, `lives a Hatter: and in that direction,' waving the other paw, `lives a March Hare. Visit either you like: they're both mad.'
`But I don't want to go among mad people,' Alice remarked.
`Oh, you can't help that,' said the Cat: `we're all mad here... |

Harry P is a little shitfucker who mastered the magic of experiencing idiotic and fucked up adventures even a heroin addict living in a state of psychotic day dreaming would be ashamed of while telling 'em to his severely cerebrum-damaged looney bin inmates jerking off to video footage showing acts of mating in the animal kingdom.

Thanks, Hamster, for saying exactly what I was thinking and sparing me the trouble of putting it into words.
Those comparisons to Lord of the Rings and Star Wars were clearly not meant to be used as proof that Rowlings plagiarized them, seeing as half the comparisons fit under the "grabbing at straws" category.
Plus, the article by Don MacPherson was poorly written and had little information in it. Just some comic book geek spouting rubbish and opinions.

There seems to be some magical meaning behind the word "otter" as it seems to be very popular animal, especially when someone puts some letters in front of it. Perhaps otter is an ancient word for dragons or demons or perhaps some other vile and magical creatures.
It's for sure though, that I live on Otter-teig(Otter is Otra in Icelandic) 3 in Reykjavik so it must be of some cosmic meaning.
and btw everybody steals or should I say "are influenced" by other people around him. Therefore proving the point that there is nothing new under the sun it only depends on marketing, being well written and releasing on a fiction hungry mass that wants that special dose right now. _________________ ... and they shall know no fear. |
