This is to be the first in a series for my new portflio. The entire thing will be astronauts used as "spokespeople" for the product. It allows me to paint something I'm interested in and create a commercially viable protfolio.

At this point, I am interested to see what people think about the idea, and the piece so far. I.e. comments and critiques would be appreciated. Thanks for taking a look!!!

P.S. The second pic is my ref photo, and yes it is a paint over, but I took the pic and it is as far enough away from the pic I feel comfotable doing it.

If he's in space, wouldn't the soup float out of the bowl? Maybe he should be sucking it through a straw from one of those little pouches with the Campbells logo on it.

Gave a lot of thought to that. Maybe I can do an iterration to see if it reads better. I initially though it may be to confusing as to whether it was soup I was selling or Caprisun, though. A very valid point bytheway.

Thank you,

JMN

Gave the suggestion some thought and did some changes. Thanks. Does it seem to fit better to the theme? And does anyone have some suggestions on how I should handle the shading on his space suit. I'm having trouble keeping it from looking too flat. I would appreciate the feedback.

JMN

I need to push the contrast in his face too it looks way flat...

mmm.... nice idea for a series. I guess what isn't convincing me -- is it doesn't seem to be what space is. maybe a little stars outside, make that soup can float around....

may be very interesting if you had the soup can close tho the camera, (floating towards camera) with label apparent.... mmm -- hrmm

the neck of hte guy seems a little long as well..

very nice, keep up updated!

Thanks for the suggestions. Once I changed it from a bowl of soup the floating can of soup occoured to me too. Good suggestion. Yeah, the neck does seem too long, as well. I'll probably put a planet in the window. Something with a nice glowing atmosphere. Thanks again for the feedback.

Big values, big shapes, pick a light source! Very Happy Don't get your colors from a photo unless its a really good photo. And don't do it even then. ;] Methinks we've been down this road before Razz

Even after doing a heap of preliminary sketches I still have revised the heck out of another of my pieces. I think one of my big problems is when I start a piece I'll be like, "Okay, this is all I want to do, a man with a space suit on eating soup." Then I start working on the background and I get the same strange feeling I get when I move to a new apartment. I see all that open space (bear with the puns, sorry) and just want to fill it up with furniture, consoles, and crap.

Well anyway, I'm real bullheaded about what changes I want to make, too. So, thanks for the suggestion about replacing the soup bowl, but I still think it would be confusing. I've also done some massive compositional changes. Sorry Ant. i realy didn't address the lightsource issue yet. I guess I should though 'cause the helmet looks like its floating. Bytheway have you ever heard of the website "Full Scratch" its a Japanese artist site, I think you may dig it. http://homepage.mac.com/isap/

Please, let me know what you think of the changes, esp. my perspective. I got a little "creative" and its doing wierd things. Thank you.

Im just going to voice what I find aesthitically pleasing. I like the previous pic with the certain textures in there. The reflections on his suit, the style of the floor ( although it could use some directional strokes to help convey the shape of the room.) But I also like the bowl. I like the thought of everyday things in space. Maybe you can place a switch by the wall that says "antigraV" or something. It will help to convey space and help out the fact that he is eating soup.
Hell, I saw aliens. I think they were eating mash potatoes and stew!

Great touch with the seats, maybe a yellow and black diagonal striped border along the wall. Like caution tape. Those kinds of markers and directional aids are almost exclusive to ships and secret underground evil headquarters... Smile

That Asian artist just blew me away. Amazing. :]

ValarianROOT - I don't know if the new perspective helps or not really. You've always had pretty good ideas, and good enough anatomy. But what always slows you down is that you try to render too much detail and precision before you have the mood and look and lighting down in the painting. If an image doesn't look like it'll work with minimal detail, then adding lots of detail won't help. Try different lighting schemes, different color schemes, different perspectives. Don't be so careful, and you'll find you advance faster! Keep at it, we all have to keep learning! :]

Space can be a very hard thing to place. Only because there is so many different things you can do with it.

It's looking good so far I think, the only thing I reckon should be improved or added is more equipment inside. More buttons, consoles, tubes, pipes and things like that. Cause everyone's seen the inside of a shuttle b4 and all you see is gadgets and more gadgets. Also, plenty of things floating around, unless you're gonna put that "Anti-gravity" sign in there or make him drink from a straw.

You could maybe also go with the approach that if you can imagine a photographer taking that photo of the guy drinking soup, then the photo cant be perfectly captured. You'd think that the angle of the photo would be a little off or something to give it that extra atmosphere. Just an idea. You dont have to go with anything I say ValarianROOT. Hope this helps.
