ccow - give me a reason why I should not call you a flamer? I mean when you are giving answers with icons like that you are just being sarcastic.
And with add-ons on earlier comments you have made I think I can call you a flamer, I am not picking a fight thou but you are.

goldenavatar0-- you thoughroughly explained some other questions i had in mind also...thanx
so now i understand it as i most likely will have to do a job on the side to support myself and my art and hopefully somewhere along the lines i might get recognized
i was too much in the mind frame that just going to a good art college guarantees you a living...i see what you mean though

also, goldenavatar0...what is YOUR status right now with college and wutnot (assuming you're an artist)

My preset status is, academic hiatus due to financial difficulties, as I prefer to put it. It sounds better then saying, too poor to afford living AND college at the same time. I'll be entering the military reserves this year so I can better afford college and living expenses.

I went to a public college/University, Lehman College - City University Of New York, for about three years off and on as I could afford it. I was mainly double majoring in music and art, unofficially, thanks to scholarships. I've only got about 2 years of serious college level art instruction under my belt. Offhandedly, I'd have to say a good art school is nice, but solid classes and good instructors are always two legs of a 4 legged table, and you're going to have to carry the other two with hardwork and commitment.

My point is usually stay realistically focused on your dreams and goals, set a bar, reach it, then raise it. If you know it's not easy going in and you're commited, you'll succeed.

3 WAYS TO MAKE A LIVING.

1. SELL YOUR SERVICES.

2. SELL YOUR PRODUCT.

3. SELL YOUR IDEA.

WITH ENOUGH OVERLAP OF THESE THREE, YOU CAN SURVIVE.

ALWAYS REMEMBER TO SAVE SOME TIME FOR ART AS FUN.

I've started going to Associates a couple of weeks ago, during the first class our instructor took the whole class upstairs to a working studio. Some guy there was working on concept art for either a movie or a cartoon, i didn't catch it exactly - but the work was pretty incredible. The kind of stuff you see on the production footage of a modern day DVD movie.

He talked briefly about the income one might expect out of that kind of job. The example was a box full of (i mean at least 20 or so) of plates with movie poster concepts pics on them. All done in gouache. Looked like another Marvel superhero film. He was getting payed $250 each plate.

He also mentioned a previous project of $300 a plate - 30 plates - which the guy did in 2 weeks.

So uh, the income seems pretty good ;] I assume you need connections + skills to get these kind of projects, but commercial artistic career is definetly profitable.
