I was wondering what certain styles/coloring of art would be called. First off what does CG stand for? How about digital art? And what would you call when you take a normal photo (real life) and draw over it (on the computer)? Would that be concidered digital art and would it be concidered ones own work (like an original not a copy?)

CG stands for Computer Graphic. Digital art is art that has been created digitally ...
as opposed to traditional art (you probably already guessed that) Wink

It has nothing to do with certain styles!
I don't know how the coloring styles are called ... except for cell shading.
You can go through Sumaleth's Link Archive and look at tutorials.
And you can wait fpr more helpful replies.

That depends on where you post it Laughing
But seriously ... it's not art!
It's ok as a practise if you're just starting out and are not familiar with the tools.
Even copying photos without tracing should only be done to practise.
Always say what you did when you post the images!

Using reference is ok ... never guess when you can find out!

Yeah, DON'T trace. It is heavily looked down appon, but in some art communities its not for some reason. Personally I think tracing takes out all the fun. Same with people who use autoclone in painter. It teaches you NOTHING. Just practice, practice, practice.

Yeah but ...

Also, learn one thing at a time.
If you're doing colorstudies, then pick a medium that doesn't get in your way.
If you want to learn using acrylics, then pick a subject you already know how to render.
For me this also means ... if you try to get coloring down you can trace to get the lineart ... or use somebody else's lineart.
Just don't use the colorpicker when you try to learn coloring.

Its art if you have taken the photo yourself...
But I consider the art of painting as an higher art form than taking photos...
