Hey, I just started college at Corcoran in DC. This was my first time with a live model. It was awesome, a really great expereince. We did a series of 15 minute poses. Any C&C would rock, since I'll be doing it again on tuesday. I can't wait.

Good work people. I wish I had time to life "draw"...but this semester is all about painting. But, actually, I go to the coffee shop from time to time and clown people...so I'll post those soon.
Bad boy I am...suppose to be doing grisaille and here I go in Painter with a palette knife and color mixer like I know what I'm doing. A lil over an hour...too long.

autoportrait from life. Painter. started it for a speedpainting, so I just went without any construction
exercising the eye for life painting. Natural light changes so quickly ... The notion of time/timing is something I almost lost working mostly on computer.

All above, great work.
too big for the scanner, but couldn't get decent shot with my camera - lost my mid tones. Done with a scrap of sponge dipped in ink taped to the end of a stick of bamboo, drawn at arms length, 15 mins.
I feel like a lone crusader sometimes with figure drawing. I've never met a student or teacher (offline) that has any interest in anatomy, or even in making the smallest suggestion aside from, "don't have preconceived ideas", which is the general response to any attempt I make to get proportions right. Maybe I should quit being so stubborn, and give up my preconceived ideas of drawing.
I also did some distance drawing with frayed rope dipped in ink, I'll see if can salvage anything from those pages.

okay, here's one where I tried to use charcoal for a second when the teacher wasn't looking. underneath my inky frayed rope and sponge scratches - it's like trying to write your name on a grain of rice using a bludgeon dipped in tar.
In spite of my whining, it has made me aware of how dull (by comparison) my pencil studies are.
a quicky of the other model in the room and- i think I must've flipped this, the woman should be the ohterway..
Hey, you're all better than me! Any suggestions? Like, what one thing do you value as MOST important in your figure studies? |

This is my first ever try with oil paints, and also my first time painting a live model, though I've drawn them before.
Sorry for my shitty web cam picture, when it's finished I'll borrow somebody's digital camera and post again. It's due tuesday so it has to get done soon.
By the way, the model is six months pregnant, she actually gained two inches around the belly since we began two weeks ago. Crazy.

A bunch of mini sketchbook(3.5" x 5.5") drawings and some figure stuff.
The other faculty at a mandatory faculty meeting. I'm glad I had my sketchbook with me. Done in 2 hours.
Newsprint. One minute bodies, but I when the poses got longer, I stuck five minute heads on them.
The model flaked on these days so students took turns posing.
Good stuff guys. _________________ Sheff

varnum, I could look at those all day. Ever thought about quiting your day job and doing fine art?
burnout, that a great skull. Your work is making a lot of progress lately from what I have seen. Drawing helps, eh? Well, that's what I have found.
but I still get cussed out if I don't send someone the "magic brushes."
this got cut short, but all I got, paint to post.

Some of the gesture drawings in this thread really blow me away. Also, the pieces with color are really rad.

Hi again. Wasn't too happy with the outcome of my first oil, I'm spoiled by photoshop - the whole time I kept thinking to myself '....her face is too dark compared to the rest of her, but I'll just lighten it later....' and then I would realize that lightening it meant re-freaking-painting the whole area.
Still shot with a crappy webcam. Here's the finished thing:
I've been very, very inspired by images on this forum. Styles and techniques that I've observed from several people and images here have taught me more about lighting and color than any class.
Thanks everybody. |
