I never know if my fanboys want to draw like me or just fuck me. Seriously. Fanboy post, female artist edition: "OMG U R TEH ART GOD...oh, and I want to touch your panties!"
It's damn creepy. Strangers propose marriage/cohabitation/raunchy anonymous monkey sex. One never knows if one is really any good, or if folks are just being nice in hopes they'll one day, under some bizarre set of circumstances, get to see one's breasts.
One time, I posted a nude study, and no less than 20 people asked if it was a self-portrait. I didn't post any more nudes. Too annoying.
When I first started posting on Sijun, some years ago, I was really bad at computer art. I had just got Photoshop and I was all "Woo, woo, airbrush tool!" I posted a lot of cheesy garbage. At first, everyone thought I was a man, and I didn't get very much attention. Then, the fellow I was living with at the time took a photograph of me which was, I suppose, somewhat enticing, and I started getting tons of asspat every time I posted any old garbage. I have improved now, but I have no idea if I deserve all the nice things people say to me. I get exactly the same compliments now as I did when I was terrible at this.
Man, I wish I never posted that stupid photo. It wasn't even a GOOD photo.

But seriously Socar, I know what you're talking about. My weirdest fangirl was a woman in South Africa who sent me an e-mail describing how looking at a particular landscape I'd done was like having an orgasm.
So now, naturally, I keep of print of that one over my bed.
For experimental purposes, of course.
You know.

You are not alone... all these strange women they constantly email me too to complement me on my art and then ask me to give them babies. I don't know what to do anymore.. its like .. i am not just a piece of meat you know? I'd just like some honest feedback.. whatever. |

AND????
Is it working? Do you have a placebo post over another bed not known to cause this effect? Do you have a trial study group?
I think you should post the landscape so we can give you an electronic sampling of its effectivity... _________________ Life is short. Expect nothing, enjoy everything.

Experimental results have thus far been inconclusive, due to a limited sample size _________________ brian.prince|light.comp.paint |

There's a difference between positive commentary on one's work, and obsessive posting to include starting threads with the name of your obsession as the title...
Also, in this instance, it's not like Spooge needs the over-the-top positive reinforcement of his efforts, okay? Especially to the level of fandom that this was starting to take. _________________ Life is short. Expect nothing, enjoy everything.

Socar Myles: well, that's what happens when you post at Elfwood! Heck, even I got a funny mail or two when posting there, and that was for crap even worse than what I make today! Coming to this forum was a hard (but necessary) awakening.. |

Ha, ha, good point--sadly, though, I wasn't even referring to Elfwood. You get a lot of overenthusiastic folks there, and on other sites like it, but the real creeps seem to come from forums. Probably because they feel like they're really interacting with you on a forum, and think you're their friend just because you signed up at the same forum they (and 10,000 other people) did. _________________ Dignity isn't important. Man, I haven't posted in here in about 2-3 months? Things really change, posts about people posting thier posts and no one posting in thier post or posting anything on thier minds in someone elses post.
Theres something funny about that. I don't get it.
But yeah, I haven't had hardly any fan posts except my favorite when I get a pat and a fat check from a client! Those are my favorite. _________________ Lichen Rice is worse than Licorice |

I am willing to bet that being a woman and producing a work about a woman makes you atleast 33%-50% more likely to get a daily favorite, and a daily deviation (in the old days) at deviantart. I mention deviantart, because it seems they have the largest sample population and many immature posters. I think they should run a poll to confirm this. I am guestimating when I think that women are 20% of the online digitalartists, but recieve 60% of the attention, and 80% of the time it seems to be no fault or action of their own.
I have often thought of eluding to being a woman when posting art before and never disclosing my gender. The massive increase in attention would make me feel like a better artist. _________________ http://prettydiff.com/ |

It's gotta be higher than that. I'm sure a lot of women don't mention their gender for exactly the opposite reason you wouldn't: They DON'T want the unwavering attention of hundreds of diehard (male) fans.
Most of the art classes I've taken in college were probably around 75% female, 25% male-in-search-of-artsy-female. Girlish technophobia aside, there has got to be more than 20% estrogen mixed into the art pool. In fact, just looking at the newspaper, it looks like most of the graphics and photography positions are female.
Hmm. Maybe a job in journalism is the one for me. . . . _________________ QED, sort of. |

Well, Socar, if it makes you feel any better, I have no idea what you look like, don't care, and wouldn't be swayed if I did.
Your art is fantastic. |

Hi everyone... know it's been forever since I posted last about art, but been busy with college and life in general.
Anywho, I thought I would make a reply on this. When I started haunting this post many years back in high school I honestly had no clue of the status of the artist that posted here. I just liked their work. And like many inspiring artist I would copy, ulter, tear each piece into it's simple elements to figure out what I liked about their art and then fit my style. I also got a lot of help from here.
But I see this place as a classroom like was said on the first post. Being an Art Education Major I have classes with both Art Majors, who spend 24/7 eating, breathing, sleeping how to perfect their style in their concentration, and Elementary Education Majors, which honestly let's just say with their art talent thank god for art teachers. So I get both ends from my peers. I have upper classmen who thrown pots for about four years and I can barely make a tumbler. I am at aww with what they make... the freedom they have... the way they can correct my sorry excuse of a teabowl mush, but I also know with time and practice that will change. But in my Ele Art Methods class I am 'THE' art student. I get the 'well mine looks like crap compared to yours.' Well duh I'm suppose to go above and beyond with my art because I am an Art Education Major and you are a Elementary Education Major. I get graded harder in my art classes because I am expected to do better.
But what I have come to find out is that artists are not Gods but are humans who have spent thousands of hours and dollars to perfect their skills... and unlike rock stars do like being treated more like friends and peers than idols. I also know that all artists love to hear what you have to say about their art. They like to know what is liked and disliked about what they are doing. Commenting doesn't seem to be the problem it's the stalker type post that are bothing people...
And as for freedom of speech... yeah everyone shouts that, but there are forms of speech that are not protected such as obscenity, profanity, libel or slander, fighting words, and words that creates clear and present danger (including annoyance to public). Plus this is a private forum. _________________ Im not saying that there should be a capital punishment for stupidity, but warning labels should be remove and let the problem take

hey guys. well, im a new face around here.
i think i've been here a month maybe. maybe less. i've made plenty of posts, and i've got attention from one person; matthew. lol. he's a mod so i guess it's his job, eh? but he's a nice guy. my whole time here posting, i think i got 2-3 comments frm 1 guy, matthew, saying nice work. yeah, kinda makes me feel left out. but i shouldnt whine. im not seeking popularity, and im not seeking 'OMG I LOVE UR WORK I WILL WORSHIP IT TILL I DIE!" no, im talking about enough attention for someone to help me out on my weakpoints. thats y i post everything i do everyday here. if i wanted the praise i'd go to deviantart and gfxartist, kiss some ass, and get it there.
at first, it was like 'wow? craig mullins comes here?' and i was CLOSE to turning into a fanboy but i decided not to bc wat wil that get me.
i feel like i'm giving off a whining tone in the way im writing all this, and i hope u dont think i am. lol.
but everytime u go read a thread, its just the same 5-10 people getting attention. i can think of at least 5 right now. and its not even positive attention, its attention like "OH MY GOD UR A GOD!! CAN I SUCK UR D*CK????" not really any 'hey, i think u need hlep there. here's some tips (good work by the way)'. i'd welcome the latter. i pity those 5-10 people in a sense regarding the first quote because i guess they'll feel obliged to answer in an appeased way?
anyway, my point; i come to this forum for positive critque because i have not found it anywhere else in the world yet.
thanks. i like ur posts by the way balistic. its 5 in the morning, and im laughing really hard. banana powered robot HAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHHHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! dude thats the best EVER!! ill remember that next time .
i hope that didnt sound like wat i posted against. |

You wont always get feedback, regardless of the activity of the boards, so it's a good idea to post on more than one forum when you really need some feedback.
Different art forums have different publics, and each one has a 'gang' of regular really talented artists.
These are some good forums I know of, I dont want to drive people off, my list is short anyway.
- sijun
- The Drawing Board
http://www.sketchbooksessions.com/thedrawingboard/index.php
(more geared towards vector art, cartoon style, and figure drawing), I think created by Shane Glines originally, in particular they have life drawing , caricature , and vector based illustration threads. There is a lot of 'ooh ahh' but also valuable advice.
- www.conceptart.org (some of the founders were old timers here I believe) you'll find similar speedpaint thread, a very cool, and not active enough imho, coloring thread (paint someone's lineart), a daily sketch group thread, self portrait threads, etc. very cool
- SOFA :
http://www.tsofa.com/forum/index.php
- Michael Mentler , the artist behind it, seems quite motivated to make these forums succesful, there are some regulars from conceptart who go there, it is centered on drawing the figure, so this should be a great place for all artist 'newbies' to go for anatomy, character drawing from imagination is covered as well as study of artists from the past..
- eatpoo.com : I dont really know much about eatpoo to be honest, so I'll refrain from commenting on my very little experience on thios forum, I'll just say I think its geared towards 2d digital art like here and they have competitions and such and are very active as well _________________ "I'm not a shrimp, I'm a KING PRAWN !" -- Pepe.

To be honest.. you people are the Britney Spears and Back Street Boys of digital art. Some of you - at least - are superstars, really. And for better cause than Britney Spears or Back Street Boys, I reckon. It's no wonder you're getting stalkers following you and panties thrown at you. Only difference is that they like having panties thrown at them. In your case they're digital stalkers and panties though, which must be preferable, no? =D
There will always be those who like to idolize people, for whatever reason. Too bad they found their way to Sijun. Oh well.. they'll grow out of it. |

i agree with diruo. Just delete unlike emails. Or better delete the email account or open a new one. Maybe after that youl never get any of these stupid emails from guys how adore your work. i dont get it sorry
and the thing about ass-kissery. Have you noticed that MATTHEW-hype at the speedpainting thread? A few months ago i can remember nobody of you ever noticed him because of his art. After Mullins startet to answer and even given him good advices almost everyone started to post something nice like "Yeah good Matthew, great progress matthew...." That sucks.
Sorry matthew nothing against YOU. i really dont want to offend you. But as an example it perfectly fits in here. |

I have to disagree with you on the Matthew comment mister see. When he was new here alot of people disliked him for reasons, including me.
Now, even if someone still dislikes him, that person has to admit that he did good work on his art and that his dedication to these forums are probably unrivaled. He contributes more than anyone else to this place, in a friendly, helpful way.
Like it or not, what Matthew gets now is merely the fruit of his labour and that is only just. But then... I only say that because Craig Mullins gave Matthew some virtual advice. |
